10,000 mile oil change interval...

I just talked with the service department at the dealership where I bought my truck. I had heard the rumor that Toyota was extending the recommended oil change interval to 10,000 miles if you use synthetic oil, and I wanted to see if that applied to my V6.

Sadly, it does not. Toyota's recent recommendation is only for cars that use (I don't recall if he said 5w- or 0w-)20 oil. IF your car does specify Xw-20 oil, then you can switch to synthetic and extend the oil change interval to 10,000 miles.

The V6 calls for 5w30 oil, so we're out of luck. Well, those of us who want to keep our warranties intact are out of luck.

 

Yeah, I'm planning on sticking to 5k OCI's with M1 0W-30 & toyota filters until 60k miles ... Then it will be 10k OCI's there after.

 

Hmmm...I think I will stay with my 2500 mile synthetic interval. The oil tests always come back showing I have much less wear in my engine than typical. Changing your oil with Mobil1 is only $50...why chance it by running long intervals?

 

Something tells me it's 10,000 miles or one year, whichever comes first. I'm just saying that because, the normal oil change is 5,000 miles or 6 months. I am curious to know why it makes a difference on the weight of the oil. That does not make sense to me.

 

I used to do mine every 3K but after I changed to full synthetic, I stayed with the recommended 5K.

It's a prefference thing. If you like changing yor oil every 2500 it's certainly not going to hurt anything, but you're wasting lots of good oil (and $$$) for little or no gain. You would definitely see fewer ppm of wear metals on a 2500 mile oil sample than a 5000 mile sample, likely half as much. But the thing to realize is that wear metals trend with mileage (especially iron) .... a 2500 mile sample with 5ppm Fe shows the same wear as a 5000 mile sample with 10ppm Fe or a 10000 mile sample with 20ppm Fe.

Your 2500 mile sample is showing low wear metals but not necessarily less wear than if you were to take your OCI out longer.

 

I use 0w-20, but I need to see something in writing before I do that, I don't want to void my warranty to save $40 on oil.

 

Filter change at 10K also?
Seems like you might want to throw a filter on at 5K just cuz.

 

I haven't sent in my oil analysis from oil change #1 yet. That was factory oil changed at ~3500 miles.

On my other car, I sent oil in for analysis and it came back perfectly fine with good viscosity, no excessive wear or contamination and with the additive package intact. That was at 8,000-10,000 mile OCI using Mobil 1 and either the M1 oversized filter or the equivalent Wix or NAPA Gold. I drove it hard while it was my daily driver and that engine is fine at 170,000 miles.

My opinion is that 2500 miles would be an extremely excessive OCI even using modern cheap conventional oil of any brand.

 

Your money but 2500 on synthetics is a waste. You could easily go 5K-7.5K and maybe higher.

Who is doing your oil analysis? If Blackstone, I am sure they are telling you there is much life left in that oil.

My Grandfather had a neighbor like you that did ridiculously low oil change intervals Mobil 1. He would take that guys used oil and use it in his Chevy pickup that had 150K and still got another 200K running 5K OCI's. His neighbor paid for his oil for 10 years.

 

The only time I did 2500 mi synthetic changes was on my twin turbo dodge stealth that I redlined every day. Even then that was way to excessive.

 

My truck is a week old (2006 db 4x4) and came with no manual the reason for the question.
What is the recommended oil weight ? And interval ?

Synthetic... every 5000-7500

 

Your 4.0 V6 uses 5w30. Toyota now recommends 5,000 miles or 6 months. Whichever comes first.

 

trust fund kit? hit it big in the market? why else would you be wasting so much money on oil by changing it every 2500 miles?! shoot, why not just change it every month, or every paycheck for that matter! think green man, use that oil a little longer!

i stick w/ the recommended 5k intervals, and just started using mobil1 only becuase walmart jacked their price of castrol GTX to be only a few dollars less than mobil1, so i figured why not!

oil analysis on a 5k sample w/ 130000 on the truck showed excellent condition and blackstone stated i could easily go another 2-3k on the oil.

 

I know some German cars (Porshe and Audi) have 12,500 and 15,000 miles synthetic oil change intervals. If that would be applicable to our trucks I would definitely go for it. I currently do it every 5,000 miles and I'd guess even that's not necessary.

 

IMO oil that is run at 10,000 miles needs changed. Not because it has broken down , but because it is loaded with dirt .
I run synthetic oil during the winter for easy start ups and during the summer for heat protection .

So if I do it myself that is two oil changes a year at 26.00 each ,cheaper than a Jiffy lube that would botch something . Plus it is one of the few things a person can do anymore himself to his vehicle due to all the electronics on them .

 

The new Corvette Z06 calls for 10,000 mile oil changes or 1 year. Is there a time limit on the German cars?
