I'm very pleased with my '17 OR and the way it's driving. I've put nearly 10k on it with no issues. It rides great and averages 21 mpg around central Ohio. I have zero regrets. Keep in mind that new vehicles take some time to break in. The first 3000 miles I was only getting 15 mpg and the transmission/throttle felt a little odd. After that it really smoothed out and it runs like a dream now. Beware of naysayers saying it's under powered and erratically shifts. I bet they haven't put many miles on it and the truck is still finding its groove.

There's no comparison between auto and manual on a boat ramp. However, I never had the ability to drop to low range with a stick on a ramp because they were RWD. Tow capacities are typically higher on autos. The hydraulic clutch took the joy out of sticks as the slave cylinder tends to start leaking before the clutch disc needs serviced. I don't know what system Taco uses.

Why do you need it stay in 6th on slight grades? It's about a 300 rpm difference?

Man not sure about that at all. I've actually been leaning back toward a full size. The third gen has given me nothing but issues and it leaves a bit to be desired in the "drivability" and Quality departments. Suggest you take a LONG test drive and also consider other options when test driving different trucks.

Drive a bunch of Tacos, if you really don't like them buy something else. They're popular but they aren't everyone's perfect tool by a long shot. Coming from a Tundra you might be disappointed in power delivery but if that's not the issue it's about a smaller size then pick up a 1st gen Tundra instead. You get the same size of the current Taco with a V8 on tap for the grunt you might want.

I did exactly what you are talking about. I had a 2010 Tundra, Access cab. It was a great truck. I got tired of driving around the beast. I opted for the long bed Tacoma and have about 950 miles so far. The mpgs are better than the Tundra. I did miss the power originally but after almost a month, I feel like the Tacoma is responsive and has plenty of power. It did take me literally two weeks to 'learn' how to drive it as far as how to manipulate the accelerator. I am really enjoying my new truck but at times miss the Tundra. The bed is way smaller all the way around. Overall though, I am loving the truck.

2016 SR5, DCSB, 6 auto and I just turned 15,400 miles, I love it, the only thing was the tranny TSB which was fixed and it is fine, I would buy another one in a heartbeat. This is my 4th Toyota truck and love them all..actually my wife wants to trade me for her car...lol

Did you get the 6 ft bed? I know exactly what you're saying about driving the beast around. It's huge and rather rough on some interstates. I much prefer to drive my Civic, hard to explain, it's just more fun. But, when it's time to do some work with the Tundra, I'm greatful for the size and power.

We have a 2016 4Runner SR5 Premium. The 4.0L motor and transmission in the 4Runner is night and day different from the TurdGen. It is much more responsive and it has not had a SINGLE issue in 2 years and 23k miles. Test drive the T4R and the TurdGen, you will see what I mean. A lot of guys here have traded their turds for the T4R and Tundra or other makes/models of trucks. Maybe because they are still made in Japan? My 2016 Tacoma is driving my wife crazy because I have it in the shop once a month.

I'm not sure that would do well in the weeds. My Tundra has chrome front and rear bumpers, skid plates, and running boards. Sounds like Hell going through them, but it comes out unscratched. Look behind the truck to see the environment before the weeds were beat down. There are also many saplings with thorns.

I switched from a 14 Tundra CrewMax 4x4 to a 17 Tacoma Crew TRDOR for a plethora of reasons. I like my Tacoma overall more than the Tundra. The one thing I do miss is the towing and hauling capabilities, the Tacoma is not even in the realm of the Tundra. Just based on this photo and the photo of another hefty load of wood and pulling a trailer, I think you would be woefully disappointed with a Tacoma if you expect to do these kinds of things on a regular basis.

Nah. Just look Tacoma resale values.

The trade mags piss all over the Taco. Yet the marketplace knows better.

Utility trailer and 4Runner is built to do what you're trying to do with your Tundra and the trailer can haul more than the little bed on the Tacoma.

I usually cut 6 loads of firewood per year, so it's really not a regular basis. Typically, the Tundra just sets in storage. In the winter, we pull the Tundra out of storage for icy roads and firewood. Then the Mustang goes in storage. I'm also selling my boat, so that won't be an issue.

I hear you. Stepping back and looking at paying $15k + my Tundra with 52K miles, seems like insanity for less of a truck. That's why I'm here.
