That's interesting. My truck does none of those things and runs like a champ at 20 mpg or so. Sorry your truck sucked.

the main thing I got from this is you buy a lot of cars...a new one every 3-4 years! lol in all seriousness, sorry you were disappointed with the 2017.

At this point, if something happened and I needed a new truck, I'd get a used 2012-2015. To be honest its not because I don't trust the 3rd gen, I just really like my 2nd gen.

Test drive:

Yeah, because during a test drive you can experience every possible scenario you'll ever encounter and know exactly what the truck is like over the course of those few miles. Headwinds, elevation gains, high altitude, towing, stop and go, freeway expedited passing, and more! A test drive lets you know the truck as if you'd had it for 10 years.

 

And that is exactly the problem. It was designed like a sports car and not like a truck. And it's power isn't higher in the rev range, it's at the top of the rev range.

 

I still find it hard to understand with that much experience in Toyota's as you say you have, that you would not see the differences immediately between how the 3rd gen drives from the 2nd gen.

I've had 5 Toyota's myself and I could immediately tell the difference. I looked long and hard at a few 15s but in the end I liked how the 16 drove. My 16 gets much better mileage than my old 1st gen and it has up sized tires, toolbox and sliders. I average 20 mpgs per tank with over 17k miles on it now.

Truck isn't sluggish at all.

Just can't see if you hated it so much how you were so swayed with all of your Tacoma experience. Oh well, glad you're happy now.

 

That's why you take more than one.... in a bunch of different trucks before you decide. I went to 5 different dealers driving both 2nd and 3rd gens before I decided.

 

Yeah, I drove a bunch, sometimes back to back, once a 2nd, then the 3rd, then back to the 2nd again on the same visit. I spent 3 months looking and driving. Guys knew I was going to be a buyer so they were patient and let me try what they had in stock. Wasn't a problem for me and took plenty of cooling off time. All the dealers had my contact info to call me when a particular truck came in. Started looking for a 15 Sport longbed and finally ended with the 16 OR longbed. Five dealers worked with me and when I finally decided, the dealer that could get my ordered truck the quickest was the guy who sold me my truck.

 

I came from a 2011 SR5. LOVED that truck. I, too, noticed what seemed like a lack of power when I test drove a 2017.

However, I noticed a very different story on the highway towing. The 2011 pulled great in 4th, but at 70mph I was turning 3100RPM.

My 2017, on the other hand, acts like the more you give it, the more it wants. Gotta rev it kinda high to get her going, but once you do it's actually hard to keep it running away from you.





Takes a lot of getting used to, but I'm starting to like the 2017 better than my 2011, and that's saying something.

 

I would never say my 2nd gen was fast, but there's no way it would keep up with my 3rd gen when the power is tapped. I realize it requires revs, but I rarely find the need to wring it out. Is there something different about the most recent builds?

 

I'm jumping in here in hopes of finding a little info even though what I'm experiencing is a bit off this direct topic. I've got a 2017 with Manual Transmission. If I sort of "short shift" so that I'm getting back on the throttle right at about 1500 RPM's, sometimes (but not always) there is a pretty severe dead spot or hesitation. Seems worse in the warmer weather and is almost non-existent in winter. I've recreated it with or without the A/C turned on, and I can sometimes recreate it by just coasting a bit until I get back down around 1500 then getting back on the gas. So far, the dealership has recorded my complaints, but can't recreate the problem and tell me all software updates are applied. I've really been trying to nail down how to recreate this and told the Service guy I'm going to come in and take a mechanic for a ride to show them the problem, but someone on a different thread said "this is an old problem and there's service bulletin on it" but I can't find that thread. Anyone heard of this or aware of it or can help me figure out a better combination of search words than "dead spot" or "acceleration hesitation"?

 

I don't think you'll find anything. The motor isn't really meant to pull a load at that RPM. The "Dead spot" you're feeling is the computer trying to change how the motor runs.

If I'm below 2K and I need to gain speed, I always drop a gear.

 

that's is the key here, most of the people not so happy with the 3rd gen come from a 2nd gen 4.0 "NON ATKINSON"

 

I'm very happy with the power of my Taco. It's all a matter of perspective , if I'd come out of a Vet I'd probably be squawking too!
