Might finally have someone lined up to buy the skid plates not this weekend but next weekend.

 

My ME that works with my group didn't know how to use a micrometer or calipers when he first started. He's really good with computers and is my go to guy if I need help in that area but he didn't have any experience with hands on work. He went to Texas university for school.

 

Wow. I had to take a class in measurement accuracy and repeatability where all sorts of measurement systems were explored. Things like having a pair of vernier calipers that are digital and go out to .0001" are meaningless when the repeatability is .001". We even got into discussions on controlled environments and the effects on measurement. That's actually one thing I use now as I measure some very small parts with a 6 millionth tolerance.

The north shore sucks ! Traffic around here is ridiculous.

 

If I were hiring for an IT position, experience would matter way more to me than a degree.

Too many people end up with four year degrees in this field, but have never touched a network bigger than their home one and their only "experience" is with virtual labs.

One of our guys used to be a CIS professor and he would create scenarios where he would deliberately break things and the students had to figure out the problem. He had dozens of things he could do to make something not work and they'd all have to figure each one out.

 

Temperature being a huge factor and cleanliness with that tight of tolerance

 

So since everyone is using CAD, I guess my mechanical drawing skills are obsolete?

I still have my t-square from school though..

 

Yeah I went to Wentworth Institute of Technology here in Boston and that's one thing I loved about it. Everything was hands-on, and they wouldn't teach you the easy/computerized way until you were proficient in the hard/manual way first.

Yeah even straight out of college into the software industry it was all about what you could do. I went through multiple 5-hour technical interviews while trying to get jobs. It sucks, but otherwise you're hiring idiots who can just say the right things.

 

I still do that when I reverse engineer parts

 

Last time I used CAD it was on DOS years ago, then used a plotter for the drawing.

 

Don't worry, I still have a blueprinter that uses ammonia and prints copies that are actually (gasp!) blue!

 

It never did get old watching people trying to chase a system in 120 degree heat.

That sounds pretty tempting even though I don't have a tow rig.

 

Why the hell do I need a 12 character password with a variety of numbers, letters, case changes and symbols for all-pro's website... I just want to buy my damned parts.
