I agree with Plain Jane Taco - if you already have a filter on the engine and I don't care whose it is, keep it and replace when it's time for the next oil change. I wouldn't dream of yanking a pricey Mobil-1 filter just to replace with an OEM.

There is nothing special about Toyota's OEM filter.

 

Likewise, the Mobil. Expect the price is pretty special, and the graphics are prettier.

 

Like all premium filters, the M1 is not cheap. The trick is to find them on sale. I buy my M1 oil and filters at Meijer. Often times they have a special on buying a 5 quart jug of oil and getting the filter for 50% off, which puts it around $6....about the same as a regular filter.

 

I buy oem filters at my Toyota dealer for $4 each which is cheaper than any aftermarket filter out there.

Yup. That's my point. The OEMs are well made and proven, and highly economical, especially when you buy several on sale. My dealer often sends me coupons too. I can't see any reason to use anything else.

 

It's almost like there's only a few factories making Toyota filters??? And the higher end filters are just different colored low end filters???? I wouldn't panic over using ANY oil filter, but if I was keeping my pickup for a long time I'd stick with Toyota

 

I use an

$17 M1-102 / M1-102A Extended Performance Oil Filter

M1-102 because I can usually get them for 1/2 price and they are highly rated....not out of some obsession. I've also used the Purolator PureOne when I couldn't get the M1 for cheap.

I use a Fram Tough Guard cartridge type filter on the wife's Prius....and always have. Oil always looks great even after 5000 miles of hard stop-and-go traffic...plus the gas engine in a Prius is constantly shutting on and off.

My father in law has 2 vehicles....an 03 Dodge Dakota and an 04 Toyota Sienna...both well north of 100k miles. I service both of them for him. He thinks Fram filters belong on a Dodge. I don't know why. So to appease him I put a Fram on the Dakota. But he's also a total cheap skate and won't spend more than $30 for an oil change. So the Dakota gets the Fram and Walmart High-Mileage SuperTech 5w-30 oil. The Sienna gets a Motorcraft oil filter and the same Walmart HM 5w-30 SuperTech oil. Costs about $20 per vehicle to do it.

I've done this for years. Both vehicles use no oil in between changes. When I replaced the valve cover gaskets on the Dakota last year the heads and valve trains looked great.

So no....over thinking shit just wastes energy.

You're not going to notice any performance differences. A larger filter holds more oil; thus, add about half a quart more than what the book calls for. It's peace of mind knowing the larger filter has more filtering media and your oil system holds a little more oil. This is especially of interest to those that like to do high mileage oil changes. So, unless you get the oil tested, you will not see nor notice any difference before/after.

PL20195, etc... filters also fit other Toyota products. I currently have a Wix 51516 in my daughter's I4 Camry. I dry-fitted the same filter in my other daughter's I4 Corolla. However, the area around the filter is a tighter fit and my hand rubbed too much on the metal walls. So, I use the OEM Tacoma size filter instead as it is larger than the OEM filter for the Corolla.

 

I'm not looking for performance gains. Being supercharged, my oil gets dirty very quickly. I change my oil at 3k and it looks like coffee every time. I figure the larger filter with more media "should" help to keep the oil cleaner between changes.

 

Mobil doesn't make filters. That filter is manufactured by Champ labs.
Toyota doesn't make filters. Their filters are manufactured by various manufactures of filters across the planet.

I use fram tough guard every 5k, change it ever time and you'll be just fine, one of the most over thought routine maintenance on the planet lol
