After an exciting 11 years together, me and my first truck are finally parting ways. It was midday and I was heading to town as casually as a Sunday drive when all of a sudden... POW!.. Aaaaand we're rolling, across the median into 2 lanes of oncoming traffic, hitting and continuing to roll over the guardrail and finally coming to rest. It all happened so quick and I remember everything quite vividly. I wasn't wearing my belt, Neil Young was on the radio, and all I did was press my hand firmly to the roof and somehow it kept me from bouncing around and leaving with only a few minor cuts. Fortunately no one else was hurt or involved. But the truck sadly is done... After a few days and a girl messaging me on FB to check on me, I put the pieces back together and believe the culprit was my wheel completely coming apart.(see pics) My truck at 11 years old with only 130k on the odometer was very well taken care of to say the least, and it definitely saved my life. Now I guess I finally have an excuse to get a new 4Runner.
Has anyone else experienced this kind of accident?

Edit: Tires were also fairly new and nowhere near bald or even considered dangerous.

I will most likely be selling the ToyTec Ultimate coilers I just put on last month if anyone is interested.IMG_0874.jpgIMG_0875.jpgIMG_0878.jpgIMG_0879.jpgIMG_0880.jpgIMG_0881.jpg

Sounds like that aftermarket wheel company is in a world of shit for the wheels coming apart.

Sure hope the wheel company has REALLY good insurance if the wheel failing is revealed to be the cause of the accident. BUT...why weren't you wearing your seat belt??? I'm not gonna nag, but...you NEVER know...glad you are O.K. though.

Critical metalwork (ie the wheel) should never ever ever fail through normal use, and should have had some level of extra safety margin to account for fatigue. I bet one or some of those spokes had been cracked for a while, and then just caused a catastrophic shear event once whatever lowered conditions were met. Should never have happened though.

Glad that you are ok! Be prepared for the wheel company to somehow blame the wheels being overtorqued as the cause of fatiguing...you definitely should be lawyering up beyond what your insurance company offers in this case.

That is freaking insane! See a lawyer. And ALWAYS wear a seatbelt - that roll could have easily ejected you - and killed you.

The wheels were bought brand new around 2009 or 10 I believe. They are GEAR brand. Not one of the biggest brands but certainly well known. Do you guys think I have a case? I've been considering it and the accident report reads verbatim "Witnesses (2 in total) say they saw Vehicle 1(Me) jerk and driver of Vehicle 1 trying to correct it. Both witnesses saw Vehicle 1 travel over the median and flip over the guardrail and come to it's final resting place." The wheel was found about 20 feet away in the ditch..

Edit: The report also states that I said that my bearings were bad but I never stated this and came to find out when I picked up the report I ran into the officer that trained the officer (kid about 20 years old) that showed up on scene. I wanted to ask why I received not 1 but 2 tickets for almost dying. Ticket 1 violation says "Driving Unsafe or improperly equipped vehicle." and 2 "Went across median into oncoming traffic" Both which I plan to fight in court are $98 a piece...

Even with the false report do you think it would be worth pursuing a lawsuit?

If some dumbass can sue Starbucks for the removable lid and win you definitely have a case against a defective wheel
