My background and reasoning if you want to read:
I have been thinking about the Military a lot lately if things dont work out with my career choice. I am waiting to get into the California Highway Patrol academy and it seems like they are really starting to dick me around. Long story short, my mom works for them, they told me they were going to push me through, my background investigator doesnt give me info, and they keep lying to me. So anyways, I really am not counting on it to come through. Right now I am a seasonal firefighter for CAL FIRE and I dont see myself doing it as a career. Which brings me to the military.

My questions: (If things dont work out with my career choice)
I know very little about the military. I am not into working on engines, I am not into inteligence crap because i'm not inteligent . I really think I would like being in some sort of infantry. I know a lot of people probably say this and I know it is extremely difficult to get into, but also been thinking about doing some sort of special ops. I have checked out the Marine corps, Army, National Guard, and Coast guard web pages. I see infantry, so would that pretty much be where I would need to start? What else is out there I might look into? I appreciate any info.

I really enjoy being in the military. I have only been in for two years but I am seriously considering going for the full 20+year career. It's not for everyone so you should really look in to it before deciding. I am not Infantry so I can't really give you much info on that.

u wanna be special forces military? air force combat control. i know were gonna hear some bs about "af special ops?... no way." i started off as this job and we had army rangers, marine recon, and navy seals all cross training with us and they said its the toughest shit they've ever been through. check it out man its good stuff. not saying those other guys aren't, im just obviously partial to the USAF.

Thanks guys. I wouldnt mind doing some sort of recon. I am not just gonna jump into this. If this is something I do it will be after a lot of thinking, which is why I started this thread so I could start gaining some info and getting ideas.

no matter what branch you do choose, you cant go wrong-- i would suggest the af-- they have been good to me and i dont regret joining at all. serving your country, free education, secure job.

im part of the medical field and i love it-- but there are sooo many opportunities. it all comes down to what you want to do. your best bet would be to get a job that transfers well to the civilian side, esp if you go guard or reserve

any questions, feel free to pm

I enjoyed my 20 years with the Air Force. However, like stated above the military isnt for everyone. For what its worth I started with just enlisting for 4 years with plans of getting out after 4. As things turned out I kept reenlisting. I would say first step is talk to a recruiter, see what jobs are available, then make a decision from there. Good luck, whatever you decide.

I have been Infantry for 5 years now. I love it. You will never find a greater brotherhood. Life can be boring sometimes but there is nothing more exciting than being the first guy in the courtyard of a target house or kicking in a door.

If you go Army and want to go into some sort of spec ops try to get a ranger contract. If you don't you can always do it later in your career. They will try to get you to sign up for 6 years, don't do it. Go for 3 or 4 figure out if you like it then decide

Ya, i wont jump into it without doing a lot of research. I mean I dont know for sure if I would like it, but I am just looking into it because if the whole law enforcement doesnt work out, getting hired, I want to do something that I am going to get a rush out of doing. I also feel like I am missing something after hearing stories from my dad in the marine corps and talking to my buddies and you guys.

I would strongly suggest doing a great deal of research before making any decisions. I did 8.5 years in the canadian military as a combat engineer and it was a good time however, now that I am older and no longer in I sometimes wish I choose a proper trade that I could use in civilian life. It all depends on what kind of person you are, your interests and long time goals. Their is nothing wrong with the infantry what so ever, my secondary role was infantry and my primary was being an engineer, explosives, bridging, land mines, scuba diving, etc. I am sure the american military has an official website listing their trades with detailed descriptions, so take the time and do some revising. The best times I ever had was in the military and I will never have friends again like I did back then.

    Good luck.....

Ya, I can only imagine how much training and waiting you guys do. But that is exactly why I am thinking about it. A huge rush and being the first in, bustin in doors and what not. As far as contract I agree with you 100% and luckily know a lot of people in the military so I think they would be able to give me the run down.

Personally, I don't buy the whole not smart enough thing. If you want to do something, by all means, the Military will ensure that you know how to do your job, i.e. training! I notice alot of AF guys speaking up, and I for one, love my job, my branch of service and my country! Granted, I live a different life style from most, but being a Load (future pilot) on the C-17 has its perks. Like traveling to Hawaii and Australia and spending a week on the beach while getting paid BANK and 4/5 star hotels all around the world!

I'm with Daftcon, even if he does fly on them old ass 130s :D ha ha, the Air Force has their side of special ops, i.e. Tac P, Combat Controller, or even the rough and tough PJ's (pararescue). I hung out with a couple new PJ's during Survival and they have an awesome job! HALO jumps, scuba, cool guns and all the dangerous situations you want!

There's a lot to be offered by all the branches, but don't settle on anything bc you feel you can't do it. You can do whatever you want, especially in the military!

Infantry is definately fun and i know several people who got ranger or sf contracts when they enlisted. Not all of them made it through but talk to a recruiter to see if you can get it in your contract. I would definately start with a short contract if I were you to make sure you like it.

I understand what you are saying 100% I just am not into the whole computer thing so I dont think I would like the intelligence type. I am more of a hands on. How long does it take to get into something like the PJ's? I got a buddy who is looking into it and thinks he will become one and get out in 4 years. I think thats a little far fetched, am I wrong?

Not really, its an option for a lot. Not sure if thats a 6 year contract or not, but they do get to do some really cool ass shit! But I believe their training is right at a year, some tough stuff too!

Intelligence, yea, kinda cut and dry boring, I get briefed by those guys all the time, they are necessary, but def. a lame job!

But if you wanted to be a jet mechanic or something, look at the Flying Crew Chief position, get to work on jets and travel where ever they go.

If your more the action seeker, than yea, infantry sounds great, but I personally always loved how the Air Force treats their people. You should look into Tac P, they pretty much Air Force guys attached to the Army/Marines. They go every where with them, and usually with the guys that first go into hostile areas.

A guy that goes to my gym is gearing up for the Ranger, is it school? But anyways, what other kind of sf does the Army offer?
