Replaced the relay and everything works perfect

 

Finally after 2 years of knowing about this thread I finally did it haha great write up

 

Looks like those contacts are too close to the metal. I would def wrap that thing up in the electrical tape

 

I recently got my hands on a slightly different relay than yours and wondering if it would work the same? It's a 25amp by NTE electronics.

You don't say what the part number is, but if you've got the R55−11D20−12F version you are golden. The other part numbers won't work.

I went to the site you had linked here, and read through it. Also, looked through your post and diagrams. Sorry, but have no clue what your diagrams were telling me to do. Have "NO" electrical knowledge at all. I want to do this mod, and have the relay and connectors ordered, would like to add this diode with the Zenner diode as well. Thanks

 

Sorry les, I don't remember posting diagrams but I really can't remember what I said that long ago... you should be fine without the diode, but if you don't mind spending the extra nickel it will be some added protection. There will be a line on it indicating the direction current is able to flow. Hook your leads together (like two L's hooking), add a little solder and heat shrink and you're good to go

 

Ok then tacabode, thanks for trying. I know what you mean by trying to remember what you posted about it. I don't mind spending the extra $$ to make it safe and reliable so I'm not chasing gremlin's later on, LOL. Again, appreciate the help and all.

 

The quick answer is the diode connects between pins 7 and 8. Without going into a lot of detail why, you would need 2 zenner diodes to work in this application and IMO is overly complicated.

If I were to buy a diode I'd find a 1N4007 (but a 1N4001, 1N4002, 1N4003, 1N4004, 1N4005, or

$8 1N4006 Rectifier Diode 1A 800V DO-41 (DO-204AL) Axial 4006 1 Amp 600 Volt

1N4006 would probably do equally as well.) The 1N400x family of diodes look like this:



The end with the stripe would be attached to pin 7 on the relay and the other side goes to pin 8. Like Tacabode say, you probably don't "need" the diode, but correctly installed it won't hurt and might help. The thing about automobiles is there are spikes and voltage fluctuations all the time. This relay would be just one more.

I've ordered a different relay with a diode built in, because it's a simple solution. If it passes my testing I'll change the link. Knowing my life it will take a week or two before I'll be able to say for sure if it will work.

 

jsi [OP] Thank you ! Greatly appreciate it, let me know when you get it done and how it goes. It will be a week or so before I get around to doing mine as well. I just want to put in a safeguard to protect the switch and stuff so I'm not chasing some problem around, which, could have been avoided altogether had I done it right the first time, ya know?

 

Did the relay without the diode. Took switching the wires around once and then it worked just fine. Again, thanks a million and let me know what you come up with on your end.

So a week or two has turned into a month, a Youtube video, and an Etsy shop - This is what I've learned:

12 volt DC double pole/double throw relays with a flyback diode are like unicorns, people say they've seen them, but danged if I can find one. I thought I'd be clever and buy a relay with an LED and wire it up backwards, because light emitting diodes are, well diodes. It didn't work. I got the same nasty voltage spikes. So I went down the road of documenting why and how to create your own 12 VDC DPDT relay with a flyback diode, so that's a youtube video. And, in the process of all that I thought lots of people are uncomfortable with electronics so maybe there's a demand for premade relays, so that's an etsy shop.

Anyway I've updated the first post with these changes and I put them here for your reading convenience.

Back when I posted this I did not include a flyback diode in the design, which I've since come to understand is a problem. After purchasing an oscilloscope and trying a few experiments I see it at as pretty big problem.



Here's the trace showing a 500+ volt spike. Wow, I knew about inductive spiking, but I had no idea how big they would get.

Ok so if I understand the relay I have used is ok and will not fry the system. It is the relay from radio shack. Which is gone now.
