    First glad you're OK..

Second, you should message this girl back and let her know it was destiny and you were meant to meet her... Don't over think it, just do it.

Glad you are alright it looks like you were lucky considering not wearing a seatbelt. Hope you get things worked out and all ends well for you.

My guess... your tires probably produced some road noise? Wheel bearing starting to fail but you could not hear it. At highway speed the bearing seized and the wheel should have been able to handle it, but failed and cracked apart. I have a set of OEM FJ wheels with my Km2's and and a set of OEM Tacoma sport wheels with OEM tires. The KM2's are lowd as hell! I swapped out wheels and tires for a road trip. After the swap, I still had road noise. I put the truck on a lift and shook the wheels, 3 of 4 bearings had play in them.

So glad to hear no one was seriously hurt man. I'd seriously consider contacting the wheel manu. they need to know about this, hundreds of other folks could also be at risk.

    --- edit ---
The wheels should have been able to withstand a lockup at highway speed. I am sure plenty of people here can attest that at some point in time while owning their Tacoma they have had to lock up the brakes at highway speed to avoid an accident, etc. and the OEM wheels did not crack. If the wheel and bearing would have all come off in one piece, that would be different. The wheel should not have failed! I'm not an attorney, but I would definitely contact the manufacturer.

    --- edit ---

check your other bearings, just to have for the record

That's why I'm going to try and stay OEM with my wheel upgade, looking at sequoia 17"s I have faith in some small wheel companies QC but I don't trust those no-name or energy-drink-sounding clown shoe outfits.

FJ Trail Team Addition 17" wheels only if you are going with bigger tires (up to 285/70/17). They have extra back spacing which other OEM wheels do not. This will prevent rubbing on Tacomas (with proper lift of course).

    I'm glad you're ok...wow!

Another argument for keeping the truck OEM when it comes to key safety components.

What a joke. Typical police. Let's go ahead and ticket this guy for going across the median into oncoming traffic due to his wheel coming off......

    Once again completely worthless.

I'm sorry about that. I was in a major wreck back in 2015. I wasn't wearing a seatbelt either, which was like the only time in my life I hadn't worn one, and LUCKILY I didn't. Probably would be severely crippled if I had it on. I told the cop I didn't have my belt on. He never ticketed me. He wasn't going to add insult to injury. The cop you had was obviously a dick. I agree fight it in court.

If I were you, and I thought there was a shred of a chance this accident was caused by that wheel failing, I would talk to a lawyer and see what they say.

The tort claim filed will be against the wheel company and it's governing bodies. You also MAY have to file a tort claim against the any shop you take your truck to. You might find out they did something wrong and they are at fault.

It could be very difficult to prove the wheel failing was the cause of the accident and likely will take years worth of work. So talk to an attorney and see what they say. You also might have to pay your insurance company back for the full cost of the claim of the vehicle depending on state law (if the suit is successful). All state laws are different and complexity of the suit is determined by state law, so just talk to an experienced Personal Injury/Products Liability attorney and see what they say.

If you do want to pursue something however, do so immediately, depending on the lawsuit, the statute of limitations could be as little as 6 months. You'll be SOL if you wait. I would not wait or not pursue based on the police report.

It sounds as if the cop thinks the OP was at fault for losing control of the vehicle and that the wheel broke after, not before, the accident. Otherwise why would he give two citations out?

I'm thinking his insurance company will be asking him a lot of questions...I hope it works out for him.
