Just purchased a 25ft travel trailer. Should I have any issues?

Fun to debate, but that's irrelevant in my opinion. Hilux, Tacomas (all gens) are not the ideal tow vehicle for that trailer. Here's the same run with a Gen 2 Tacoma, and it was even worse.

Not on wet pavement. With a load that heavy, it is much safer than staying in 2WD. The load distributing hitch will pull a lot of weight off the back wheels and it makes it tough to accelerate without spinning the tires.

Strange. In my opinion if you're comparing the way a vehicle tows to the way another vehicle tows, having the same drivetrain is an extremely relevant item.

I live in SoCal. Lots of hills and valleys. Not sure how your area is, but if it isn't as flat as Florida, you're going to want more truck. While the Tacoma is capable, you'll know it's just a V6. My boat is around 3700 loaded... and the truck struggles going up hills. Turn on the A/C and it hates you.

It's relevant, but neither truck is the right tool for the job.

That's not even close to a real world towing test. Driving on a winding 2 lane non divided highway through the mountains is where lives are in danger. You're coming downhill through steep winding 45mph turns for 10 miles, and all of a sudden, you see the sign 10mph sharp U turn. The brakes are hot, you're going way too fast, everyones screaming. This is going to get ugly. The other bad situation is when you're driving in rush hour traffic on the LA freeway. Even if you try to leave a safety margin for safe stopping distance, everyone else will jump into the gap to get home 10 seconds earlier. All of a sudden, cars go from 70mph to stopped. More ugliness.

That's not even getting into things like intermitant crosswinds, torrential downpours, hail, getting lost in Harlem, etc.

In comparison (apples to oranges, I know) the 2 friends I fish with the most have trucks as well. One has a dodge with the hemi... pulls my boat, even up hills, no issues. The other has an F250 powerstroke and that truck doesn't even know the trailer is hooked up. RPM's sit at 1500 with the cruise set at 65. When we go up hill, the turbo psi goes up 1 or 2... and the RPM's don't move.

Having towed with my truck, and theirs... I really like having more truck than I need.

I had a small farm in SW VA and needed to tow a horse trailer, large round bales of hay, a heavy JD 4x4 tractor with a loader on mountain grades. I kept upping the truck and ended up with a Duramax that I used for 13 years. Those trucks are made for heavy towing using a goose neck hitch, brake controller, E load rated tires, etc. I have since moved where I don't need to tow, and now looking for a Tacoma for light hauling. People will brag about towing all kinds of heavy trailers with not enough truck. Maybe rarely, but never safely or without fear in the back of their minds. Personally, I wanted a truck rated for at least 25% more than I needed to tow. Tacomas have a useful purpose, but even with the V6 and Tow Package, it's going to be strained to safely and comfortably tow the OP's new trailer in the TN mountains. He is headed for a not pleasant experience. Keep the truck and find a smaller and much lighter camper at 3500#. Go back to the trailer dealer and demand a better deal on trading that trailer for a lighter/smaller one.

We went ahead and got the tundra today... or thoughts were 1 safety and comfort.... but also future usage and towing. We got a really excellent trade on the tacoma and a great deal on a 2015 tundra wad 20k miles. Thanks for all of the advice and info guys.

Wise choice. For the safety of your family and other drivers on the road, you made a smart decision. You still need to learn what the truck will do, in a controlled environment, but now you have a much greater safety margin when you get in a bad situation.

My thoughts exactly...I'm eager to read how things go now that he has the Tundra and all of this confirms the idea that RV dealers will tell you anything to make a sell. A 5000lb 24' TT is a lot for someone who has little to no experience towing regardless of how large the tow vehicle is. With that kind of length and weight behind you even with a proper hitch the truck will act differently in every way. Wait until you hit that bridge on the interstate that isn't completely level with the road or get passed by an 18 wheeler going 80 mph and it sucks your rig into it. That'll make your butt pucker up tight!
