That's probably what it will take to get a fix.

Here's a really important, and non-biased question you have to ask yourself before proceeding in any direction.

Do you really love this truck? From this post is sounds like you're wanting to love it. That's not the same thing. I love the color of mine, the interior, and I love that it's made me some awesome friends via the forum that I go wheeling and camping with.

That's why I'm in it for the long haul. It has actually very little to do with the truck, more the lifestyle.

If you don't feel the same way, don't throw a bunch of cash on something that will likely not make a hill of beans when you trade it or sell it unless you can find the right buyer. Most likely you'll trade it, and the dealer won't refund you the costs of the gears, especially if aftermarket.

Consider what money you'll lose in the trade depreciation vs the cost of re-gearing + trade depreciation. Do you love this truck that much?

Keep in mind this isn't an attack or picking on anyone. This is the real question you gotta ask yourself before you decide if it's worth salvaging. Don't listen to the noise on here, no one makes that payment and no one drives that truck but you.

Mine was getting pretty bad right before they replaced it. The 2nd one was howling between 50 and 65 then I spent 1500 on my AAL and bilsteins for 1.5" lift and it helped to quiet it down a bit. Still does it at 60mph but not as loud. I expect it will get worse with more miles. I will not be dumping any more money into wheels or tires. If stock tires wear out will replace with OEM.

Nope, Not I, not a sound.
    But I don't have the G/Y Kevlar tires, I have BFGoddrich A/T.

Try adjusting your tire pressure, sometimes that helps.

Start by looking on the tire sidewall for the recommended max load pressure and work your way down to a few lbs below that.
So lets say if Max load (cold) on tire sidewall calls 44lbs try 41lbs cold, drive it and see if the sound is diminished. If it is, try a different set of rubbers after you wear those out.

But no diff noise Problemo here.

I have the same sounds. Also a friend of mine has a 2017 SR5 and his rear pumpkin had to be completely replaced! I asked him if it were the tires and he said they found the noise in the rear end when it was on the lift. Tires did not have anything to do with it.

That guy will continually diminish or dismiss any problem that might be associated with the truck and instead he will often provide misleading advice or bad info. You are correct the issue has NOTHING to do with the tires. They were able to isolate my rear differential noise to the rear axle using Bluetooth chassis ears. Then they used a stethoscope to further isolate the problem. This is something Toyota is aware of and I expect eventually we will see a fix for this. Replacing rear ends on these trucks is costing Toyota a lot of money! Dealer said when they replaced mine it would be about $3,000 if the customer had to pay for the parts and labor. Again you're right, the tires have nothing to do with it.

Further proof in this thread. Read the work orders people have posted and look at the wide variety of trucks impacted. Different trims with different tires: https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads...oise-howling-when-feathering-throttle.442341/

I had my rear diff replace 2k ago and so far no noise to speak of at 55-60 mph on accel. or decel. Took about a week for the gasket to come in.

Good to hear. Mine started at right about 2K, or at least it was loud enough for me to hear it at that point.

I'm really hoping they solve this issue, it is annoying.

That is when mine started also, had it replaced at 10k, now has 12k and still sounds great :fingerscrossed:

Gotcha. Yes if you put bigger tires on the truck you will have a smaller final gear ratio and the truck will go faster for each engine rotation.

However if you go past stock, say 4.88 and stock size tires, the engine will turn over more with less tire rotation and your crawl is slower.

I have almost 120:1 final ratio in my '85 pickup in four low with 35" tires. It goes very slow.

    Right.

Isnt it modifying gearing pretty tricky? You'll have to adjust the idle speed, and if you have an automatic, you'll mess up the way it shifts. How's engine idle speed set by default? On level ground, at idle my car moves forward ('crawl'?) in 1st and 2nd gear only, but in 3rd the engine will stall if you dont give it gas.

Gearing (or tire size) has nothing to do with idle speed. Why? Because idle speed is engine RPM when vehicle is in park or in neutral for a manual. When you put your vehicle in gear then your engine is under load and there is no more "idle." No load versus loaded engine conditions. Totally different.

OK. I was referring to what happens if your vehicle is in gear but you don't touch the gas pedal. In any vehicle I've driven, it won't stall in 1st or 2nd. It will stall in 3rd and above. Of course, assuming an intact clutch :)

If you increase idle speed sufficiently, it will not stall in 3rd either--right?

I honestly don't remember if there was a point where the replacement didn't howl. I want to say it took a few hundred or a thousand miles to come back. It's definitely progressed.

But I like hearing success stories because it gives me some hope. I'd be happy if they could promise me 10k more miles with no noise. That'd buy them some time to get a legit TSB our or have some Indy shops start identifying the solutions.

Correct but why? It's not a function of engine RPM at that point, it's a function of torque required to maintain velocity desired. For example, if you are going down a hill, then no engine power is required (gravity is working) but going up a hill then it will stall even if only in 1st gear without getting more power from the engine. Changing gearing or tire size won't help nor hurt. It just changes the "when" on power demand.

Just a few days ago l noticed that mine was howling a little on acceleration too but not as bad as steady or deceleration.

when you put it that way makes sense.

I just remember a lot of people on here saying after regearing they accelerate so much better and more torque. I always asked how is it when doing a hill decent, and they wouldn't say, just would say 'its great going up a hill'
