2WD or 4x4

I'm think of buying a Tacoma and which would be better a 2wd or 4wd DC. I will be mostly using it for work/school, taking it camping trips, fishing, snowboarding, once in a while go little off-Roading but nothing major. Would a 2wd be good enough to do this job or should i stick with a 4x4. Why I'm deciding is because 2wd is cheaper and money is tight for me now so i don't have alot to spend.

I forgot to mention that I'm looking for a used one.

 

It's up to you. If you do 2wd, may I suggest a TRD Prerunner with a locker. It's quite capable in many off road situations.

You live in CA. Going snowboarding in 2wd frequently requires you to do the pain in the ass job of installing chains. 4wd does not.

 

4wd...I have the TRD Pre with locker...it's good most of the time, but 4wd is good all of the time.

 

im looking at one right now..its a 2003 Toyota Tacoma Prerunner DC SR5 2wd.

 

Its good to know that the 4x4 is there if/when you need it. I barely ever use mine...but I know its there too.

Get a 4WD or you will always regret it.

 

There are a lot of Prerunners bombing through the desert that don't regret it. Most of us don't do that though.

 

I have a TRD Pre w/locker also and although sometimes I wish I had 4WD it isn't enough for me to wish I had gotten a 4x4. I've never been stuck yet w/ my truck, the locker always got me out but I don't do any deep sand or mud though. The Prerunner w/ locker is very capable offroad, it surprised me a lot and my friend with an 08 Dodge Ram Cummins 4x4.

Another thing is a 4x4 is more maintenence and more weight and more things to go wrong and break. Also, at least for my insurance, a 4x4 costs more to insure.

Overall I'm glad I got my Prerunner, plus it has that "underdog" factor

 

I bought my prerunner last June and started worrying about only having 2wd when I began to head up to the snow every week. Ive been up to the snow 20+ times this season and have never had any issues with my truck , it makes it up perfectly fine. Having 4wd doesnt mean you wont have to use chains either as caltrans often asks for 4wd+ snow tires on all 4 corners.

I think a prerunner will do you fine, you might wanna get a locker though if you're planning on doing even a little offroading.

 

Good advise, w/o my locker I would've gotten stuck a few times.

Honestly, if you're going to be going up to the mountains during the snowy season, I highly recommend getting 4x4. 95% of the members here will say 4x4. It all comes down to what YOU need.


Snow is the only reason I wish I had 4x4. The off-roading I do doesn't require 4x4. Even if I had 4x4 I would do the same stuff. I don't want to damage my vehicle. Even though I did mess the bumper up pretty good...


That's an unrelated story though.

Even better is to get the Off Road TRD 4WD and have ACTIVE TRACTION CONTROL (A-TRAC)... AWESOME SYSTEM...

I say 4x4 man! I havent used mine that much, but when I do Im sure glad I got it. It has gotten me out of some tight situations.
