Frame rust prevention

Hello all -

I am looking to spray my underbody and frame with some rust prevention spray. Do yall have any recommendations on what I should use? I am doing this for piece of mind.

Eastwood has some really high quality stuff with many different options. Go with them over anything from a department store for sure.

 

I recommend some sort of rust encapsulator first

 

Does the underbody look bad?

 

It has surface rust visible , but what we can't see it's what ate the 1st generations frames, so the precaution is start from the INSIDE out , eastwood internal frame paint 1st and then the exterior goes, clean , rust converter ( only where rust exist) then rust encapsulator paint, my recommendation is CHASSIS SAVER, I did those steps on my link if you wanna see pictures of before and after.

By the way 3 cans of interior paint are ok but to be safe I will get 4 If will have to do it again or to be more generous.

Thanks , another option for the upcoming winter . I'm looking at boeshield T9 or now the amsoil hd mp . I wish here was a way to tell which is "best" lol . I don't really want to go with fluidfilm because as I understand it "stays wet" and also hear is STINKS for 2 weeks once applied . I think I would rather a dry film.

Any opinions ?

 

I can confirm both points. To say it smells is an understatement. I think I have a pretty strong stomach, and that shit made me nauseous for a couple of weeks. I can't smell it at all anymore (had it applied last fall).
And it does stay tacky/waxy, and because of that everything sticks to it. It's been OCD therapy for me. Drives me nuts to see all the filth all over the frame, and suspension, but everyone swears by it. If you do get it done, make sure you tell them (if you have a shop do it) to only apply it where you want it. Otherwise they may go nuts with it, like the place that did mine. Overall I think they did a good job, I didn't think to tell them not to coat my suspension though. At some point, I need to get under there and spray some Simple Green on my suspension components.

 

No need to get in a hurry.

4 more months and you'll be ready for your fall re-application.

 

According to the tech, they recommend re-application every 20,000 miles. At the rate of miles I put on the truck, I'll be be due in another 4 years. I'm the original owner (2005), and the truck has ~85, and some change on it. When/if I have it done again, I will make sure they avoid the suspension.

 

The best way to go is boiled linseed oil - spray it on and it dries to the touch in a day or so - collects little to no dirt unlike Fluid film - very little smell unlike Fluid film and that little smell goes in a couple of days - last advantage it's a lot less $$.

 

So you can drive a few thousand miles on wet salt roads every year and just let it sit?

I'll pass. I've seen too many salt country rust buckets.

Driving / living in salt country deserves attention every year. Both cleaning and protecting, regardless of the product used.

 

Yea that's what I hear about it , I'm just starting to look into what I want to use . It might work good but I don't really want my truck smelling like a dead fish or whatever it smells like.

Another reason I don't want to use it , that would drive me nuts seeeing a sloppy mess of my frame... even thou it's protecting it , it'll be a dirty mess no thanks lol

That's why I'm looking for a "dry" alternative , I can deal with a "chemical" smell . I have no expieerence with fluid film and I don't think I want to even try it tbh . My frame and underside of my truck you could literally eat off of now it's that clean

 

Pretty much that's what I'm looking to do, and I think that's what people are doing . Spray it on in the fall (before winter) and wash it off in the spring (near end of winter when the first few rains come) . The first few rains should wash the road salt away for the most part . And then they say you should reapply a coat for summer (high humidity obviously causes rust also )

I'm not sure but I hear you can rinse off the underside of the truck with a garden hose and it won't hurt the application ... I'm not sure how true this is thou

 

Originally used fluid film but am certainly preferring amsoil because of the dry film. When I picked up my travel trailer I did the whole underside

 

Thanks for your opinion , appreciate the feed back after using fluid film . Wonder how it will hold up / work compared to fluid film

 

I also believe fluid film neutralizes rust , I'm not positive of this just from what I've read . I also heard it penetrates the metal to protect it .
