Suggest a Radar Detector

I have had a cobra radar detector for the past few years and its time to upgrade to newer and better things, what is the best radar detector on the market???

I had radar detectors all my driving life. My Cobra crapped out 6 months ago & I didn't even know it. The lights were on, but no beeps. I looked at replacing it. Either replace it or get a GPS/Fish finder for my boat. The boat won. I still drive fast, just pay attention more. I usually do 10 over the speed limit.

i heard that they dont actuallly work like they say they do.

 

They work pretty well as long as you aren't going too fast. They can usually see forward about 1/4 mile. Longer if there are no obstuctions. However, if you're cruising down the road at 100mph, you'll close that distance pretty quickly, with not a lot of time to react (at 100mph you're travelling at 147 feet per second, you'd close in on 1/4 mile in about 9 seconds. And by then, you're right next to them). I find they're best when I'm travelling about 10mph more than the posted limit. Most cops will ignore 5-10 over out here, but some still do give tickets. Plus it can alert you that a patrol car is behind you.

There are also tactics that the cops can use to defeat them. For example, if they don't have the radar active until they see you and point it at you, having a radar detector won't do much good. Laser detection is usually pretty worthless for the same reason; if it's hitting your detector, they've already got your speed. Then it's pretty much just letting you know that they know. Plus, out here, there are helicopters and planes. As anything, it shouldn't be a crutch you depend upon. You still need to be diligent. It's just another tool.

Of course the ultimate way to avoid getting a ticket is to not speed. I've changed my tactic on my bike. I jam through the twisty roads quickly but keep to the speed limit on the straight-aways. Odds are that's usually where they'll catch you. Besides, the twisty part of the road is the fun part anyway.

 

Try a Valentine radar detector...I really like mine. The whole family has them. 3 In all. Of course nothing saves you from instant on....

Valentine's are nice for the direction arrow. It's good to know when the signal is coming from behind you.

 

Having the arrows, bogy counter and band indicator really gives you a lot of information and lets you decide how much you need to pay attention to the alert. I have had many different kinds of radar detectors over the years and without a doubt my Valentine is the best. One really nice feature with the Valentine's is if there is a new form of radar out there you can send your detector back to Valentine and they will upgrade your unit so you don't have to buy a brand new one.

One suggestion I would have is be careful of any website that claims that this radar detector is better then that one if they sell radar detectors. I think I have seen radar detector comparisons by car and driver in the past and since they don't sell the units I think their evaluation would be more valid.

 

just go the speed limit. I know, not a popular idea but it has saved me a lot of money.
