The actual recall instructions to the dealers from Corp is to "hold the trucks for further remedy" that show signs of leaks.

So some dealers may not want the hassle of paying and getting the rentals set up and keeping the trucks on their property. Yes Toyota pays for everything but us usually it is a reimbursement to the dealers.

Also in the instructions it mentions people who show up prior to the letter that comes out mid June, to perform the inspection, if leaks are observed hold the truck for further remedy so Toyota has a idea of how many parts to source.

Toyota could simply doing this just to make just enough parts and no more. Don't want to spend more money than they have to..... That maybe the real reason. Same as taking up to a year to replace a frame on the 2nd gen rusted frame trucks. Yep they would order the frame and you would wait until it showed up at the dealer. Mine took 9 months others took more than a year. Bottom line Toyota doesn't give a rats ass about current customers and that is pretty much true with most car companies.

If a recall is about a major safety issue, does it mean that it is illegal to drive the vehicle on public roads? So in other words the dealership can legally keep your vehicle till it's roadworthy again?

Can't say in general. It's currently on a truck-by-truck basis... Go here, enter your VIN and try your luck at the "Toyotal Recall" game.

I was told that the Taco models built late 2017 are recall-free, feedback please !, Also my main issue is; if the dealer keeps your truck pass 39 days due to a recall issue, don't you have a right to request the dealer to cancel your purchase contract if the buyer is not satisfied and just wants to move on and buy another vehicle, with another dealer, this seems fair to me

It most likely would take a lot of money and Lawyers to get to the bottom of that.

You CAN NOT cancel a sales contract, except in very limited instances, and only for the first 3 days. You keep asking this same question but, your just barking up the wrong tree. You own the truck. You and whoever financed it, Not the dealer and not Toyota. Call your lender and run it by them and see how fast they laugh at you. Its yours till you sell or trade it. Read up on "lemon laws" and how often that actually works. I bet its less than 1 %.

The answer seems very simple to me. Drain you gear oil, pull your wheels off, pull your shafts, pull your rear driveshaft off, pull your third, clean the mating surface, install RTV, let it sit for about 10-minutes, reinstall everything, fill with gear oil. Drive it and be happy. Now after you've done that it makes sense why Toyota doesn't want to do that to 220k vehicles. It takes time and in reality it's probably unneeded in 99% of the "cases" of seeping diffs. Anyone that's ever dealt with or completed it on other vehicles knows it's likely to seep again.

Easier solution, remove your fill plug, squeeeeeez gear oil in until it comes out the hole... check it periodically...

My guess is Toyota will release a gasket similar to lube locker that will take up the imperfections.

That's so sad to hear from a customer service standpoint, so the dealer can take away your vehicle for as long as they want and you don't have an option to cancel your dealership vehicle purchase contract unless you see legal assistance

I don't think you can go back on purchase contract like that, you can ask, but I doubt it will get you anywhere unless they do you a really big personal favor. Just because you're not satisfied, probably not. The recall holding of your truck sucks, but the fact they are holding it, shows that toyota is trying to remedy the defect. Cars were held for months for airbag recalls, so I don't think there is much you can do but wait.

Noted thanks. I believe that if you are not satisfied with the dealer, recall or not, and you can articulate that your new 40000 vehicle with 12 miles has been held on out of service for 39 days you should be allowed to bail out of your contract. Just saying !

Um, actually, there is an official recall... it's noted on the website you can enter your VIN number into, so incorrect there. You state "when Toyota has a fix" and I clearly call BS on that as well as Toyota has a fix for the vehicles they are building now. Therefore, there is a fix, it is just not getting communicated down. Sorry, just tell us what the issue was so that some of us can fix it. I do NOT want to go back to my dealership... I'd rather it be fixed right. You may trust your dealership... I do not.

The other call-out to my post on how to repair was actually pretty accurate... the real and true fix would suck, but that's still not going to let me let Toyota off the hook. So, kudos to that explanation, but I'm still ticked that I have an issue that could/may/may not be a "real" problem.

I have told Nissan to shut their line down due to a design flaw and it happened. Sorry, it does happen so that the damage is contained to only a few vehicles. I will not go into too much detail as there is potential liability on these vehicles, but it happened and will continue to happen. You stop before it gets out the door if at all possible. I've seen production lines stop all the time and you always get the "we're losing $X per minute/hour that you don't have this corrected and we are going to charge downtime back to you" line. You actually think a plant will run crap out their door knowing that they will have to pay to have it fixed at some dealership? They get hit w/ the charges when all the accounting gets done and heads do roll if someone let something stupid happen.

Corporate does not decide when a plant stops production... the plant does.

My point is that they know how to fix it as they would have the "good" parts at the plant going into the trucks they are building today if it was only a gasket or such issue.

37 days for me. So yeah it's getting to be around "mid-June" when they said they would mail out the recall letters... which I'm hoping means when they're ready for the flood of Tacoma owners bringing their trucks in (as opposed to us early Tacoma World freaks). So I hope this is around the time they have the parts for a fix, and I'm hoping the vast majority of Tacoma owners can just bring their truck in, have a quick fix and be on their way, like a recall should be run.

Pure logic and makes the most sense.

My truck didn't have issues per tech review. Was mine built after the timeline of when the issues were located and updated, possibly. I hope this was the case.

Sorry about that, I wasn't trying to call you out. You just asked what the fix would be and then you'd do it yourself. Probably not a DIY repair you'd want to tackle.

At this point and based on my individual recall experience with my Taco 2016, holding my car for 39 days sucks no matter how you look at it. I just want to cancel my car loan and forget about Toyota for a while. I had enough !!!

My mistake. Toyota has issued a recall but NHSTA has not I guess. Also no individual Toyota to customer communication yet right?

Please let me know if any of you has a way to terminate your auto purchase contract with Toyota/dealership , not involving retaining lega assistance, due to ongoing recalls, I'm fed up , 40 days and counting without my truck,
