ShiftSense Pro - transmission shift controller for Gen3 Tacoma

Lol well I don't remember asking you anything, but since you replied....
Try to read my full post. I said I did in fact check the FAQ's on the link provided and the OP. I then said I don't want to read through 1300 posts to find my answer, and was hoping for a short reply from someone who has used the device. So are you part of the company that produces this, or just sticking your nose where it doesn't belong?

Easier to reply here, plus it may help others who are curious if this product addresses shift speeds and also don't have time to read 1300+ replies before they make a purchase. I might end up emailing him anyways and posting back if no one has an answer.

 

The SSP is designed to provide the driver an alternative shift-schedule to OEM. While it can provide the commands to upshift or downshift at a more appropriate speed/rpm, it does not change the actual algorithm that the ECU uses for solenoid/valve-body control of each transmission shift. Those functions for fade-in/out of the clutch bands, gear-transitions, and torque-convertor control are developed and programmed by Toyota and the transmission mfg (Aisin). Altering those is beyond the intent of the ShiftSense device, and would have be much more likely to impact vehicle warranty and long-term performance.

Toyota has issued TSB's for the Gen3 which improves some of the flares between shifts. If this is the dragging you are referring to, you might be able to address it by having the OEM updates applied.. (You can find a ton of info on the TSBs in some of the other threads on TW). But otherwise, you will have to live with the relatively slow/comfort-shifts.

 

Thanks. That's what I was wondering. They definitely set shift times up for comfort and NOT clutch longevity, but that is expected of any manufacturer. I know they left a ton of room to play with the set shift speed and what the trans can actually physically do. Thanks for the reply.

 

Installed #1209 last night. As one of the other members stated it took longer to read the instructions and go thru the flight check than it did to install.
Drove 16 miles to work this AM.
Happy with reservation. - Let me explain.
- It's now a different truck.
- No more hunting for gears that are not appropriate for the speed/situation
- Shifts where I would if I had a MT.
- Stays in the correct gear for as long as it needs to. Example - Got this hill on the way to work where I'd use engine braking in 2nd in S mode. Now she shifts to 2nd and stays there while off the gas. Sweet
However,
- When setting cruise control it takes a while to engage. No biggy.
- Final downshift when coming say to a stop sign is rather abrupt, slams. Does not do that (never did) in D.

So is it worth the $175? Well I guess since the worst objection I have is the final downshift but I can live with that and it only does it occasionally.

In other words a note to the skeptics.......buy the damn thing, you'll be happy you did.

 

There are no clutches on this transmission you must be smelling something else.....

 

Lol wut? I was joking about smelling them, but there definitely are clutches in this trans.

 

From the sound of it, I think that final clunky downshift you experience is probably the one that the majority of 2016/2017 owners have felt ocassionally in their trucks from day 1 (including mine). Unfortunately that is due to the OEM programming making its final downshift to 1st gear. If like most other trucks, it occurs while slowing at about 7-8 mph, as the truck actually makes a shift from 3rd to 1st. The SSP is designed to command down to S2, so the OE is handling that final shift to 1st.. Hopefully Toyota can someday issue a TSB to solve the cluncky downshift issue since it is so prevelant.

 

I freaking love mine. For the first time in 2 years, I'm not angry when I get out of my Tacoma. However, I am getting a little bit of a hard shift when the truck goes from S4 to S3 coming to a stop. @dcz108 - is this something I should be concerned about with my SSPro or just another shitty issue coming from the TSB?

 

When using SSP, the normal downshift from 4-3 is programmed to occur around 25 mph. You'll feel a slight deceleration as it engages to 3rd and the RPM comes up. This is normal. We did alot of tuning of that shift point and found this was a good point to make the the shift to 3 so you are already in the appropropriate gear when you want to accelerate again (after you make your turn for example). This saves from making the downshift and hesitation after you get back on the gas, which was one of the primary complaints of the gen3 when in drive 'D' mode

 

This product is incredible. If you are wavering at all... Don't! I installed mine yesterday in 7 minutes and having only had it in place for 24 hours I can already tell it is exactly what people have been asking for.

I wasn't really unhappy with how the truck was driving but decided to give this a try based on all the positive reviews. Awesome product Dcz108!!!

 

Well I have read enough reviews to give this a shot. Ordered last night.

 

I've had mine installed for a little over a week and very happy with the product. Makes the truck more enjoyable to drive.

 

I have been driving on the "new chip" for a few weeks now and I have to say, I no longer even think about the transmission or what gear it is in. If I hear it shifting a bunch, its usually those rare moments i didnt put it in S lol

 

I ordered a couple of weeks ago. 1247 should be shipping soon, and I can't wait to give this a try. I sure hope it lives up the positive reviews.

I just got 23.9mpg on an 180 mile trip to my folks place. In the past, before I had the SS, I would get 19-20 ish.

My normal in-town / typical driving is right around what I've been getting with summer gas 19mpgs.

Edit: op replied. It is a safety. It won't engage above 65mph. Everything below this line just proves I was speeding. The ShiftSense is awesome.

Side note: if you take the SS back into D, you have to turn it off, then on again, then back into S mode to get it to re-engage. In other words, if you have it on and move it to drive you can't just plop it back into S and expect it to turn back on.

Anyone else able to confirm this is normal behavior?

 

If you manually shift up or down while in "S" or shift over to "D" the ShiftSense will go inactive. Shifting from "D" back to "S" should re-activate the ShiftSense and you should hear a beep confirming this.

 

I just went out and tried mine (albeit without actually driving)... When I go from D to S, I hear the faint beep. Then I move the lever back to D, then back to S again. I hear the beep again. As far as I know the SS re-engages any time I move from D to S.
