Anyone still dealing with a hard downshift and a clunk when coming to a stop? Mine isn't just when the motor is cold - it happens nearly every time I come to a stop. It isn't always a harsh clunk, but it pulls way back in third gear and almost releases when I'm under 5 mph in such a way where I have to apply the brakes harder than I previously was to make sure I come to a complete stop. I know there are a bunch of threads but it seems that people have stopped updating most of them.

I've had the trans fluid manually checked by both the dealer and an independent trans shop. I've greased all the zerks and checked for play in the drive shaft. Trying to nail this down, if possible, before I leave my truck at the dealer this coming week for the 20k service. I have a 2017 TRD OR 4x4 Auto. Thanks for any help!

    Give this a try:
Re-torque propeller shaft bolts - every 15k or 18 mo (severe: 5k or 6 mo)

    Torque specs:
    U-joint bolts - 65 lb-ft (14mm/17mm)
Center support bearing - 27 lb-ft (be careful, if it was loose, may need realignment)

    Tips:
    1) You will need 14mm and 17mm box ends or flarenuts for the u-joint flanges, sockets won't fit
    2) The flanges at the transfer case have a 17mm bolt head with a 14mm nut
    3) Flanges at the diffs have a 14mm bolt with 14mm nut
    4) Recommend a box-end or flarenut crowfoot on your torque wrench, but don't forget to lower your torque setting due to the longer torque arm. Here's a calculator: http://www.cncexpo.com/TorqueAdapter.aspx
    5) Will have to remove heat shield at rear of xfer case (12mm)
    6) Thanks to @maccus for the detailed info here

    Re-torque leaf spring u-bolts - forum recommended

    Torque spec:
    52 lb-ft (19mm)

Also check the hanger bearing Fasteners.
    Edit: And transmission\engine mounts

Have you tried stopping in neutral to eliminate the transmission?
Otherwise, I'm going to say look at the slip joint for lubrication or hydraulic lock(slip joint is pressurized).

Yes - when I put it into neutral coming to a stop, I have zero issues.

Just trying to get a gauge as to whether it's a legit grease or torque issue with my truck or its still some problem with the code that's in the most recent TSB. My dealer keeps telling me that Toyota is aware of this issue and that they're working on a software fix.

I've only had my truck for almost 2 months and have for sure noticed this. I get the clunk and rpm surges.

Sounds like a torque converter clutch problem to me; not fully unlocking.
Could be the actual clutch, fluid, SLU solenoid, SLU solenoid fluid circuit, tcm proramming, sensors that feed the tcm...

Definitely noticing RPM surges when the truck downshifts into 3rd - which is a hard downshift - then it either clunks into (2nd or 1st) or shifts smoothly but the truck actually picks up speed due to a lack of resistance that you'd normally get shifting down... it's almost like the truck drops into neutral. No signs of this when slowing down in neutral. Have you heard of anyone having their torque converter replaced?

Also - not sure if this helps, but if I keep the truck in S3 and drive around on 35 mph streets, I have absolutely no issues coming to a stop. It appears to be only going from a higher gear into 3rd.

Sounds like the torque converter, related sensor or solenoid. S3 eliminates TC lockup.

@splitbolt, thank you so much for the info. Do you know where I might be able to find the TC lockup elimination info written down? Not that I don't trust you, but I have a feeling I will be educating the dealer when I bring it in and I've learned coming there with documentation helps.
