quick question about "drop in filter"

I'm gunna be taking my taco out on a 1300 mile trip in a week and i have a question about filters...i haven't upgraded my trucks air filter from the stock one i bought it with, mostly cause i was waiting to get a whole new CAI...but now i'm wondering if i wouldn't be better off maybe buying a good drop in filter before the trip instead, since who knows when i'll get the CAI i'd like...will a better preforming filter help any with gas milage? and what brand do you guys suggest...i'm not too sure how good the K&N drop ins are, since i haven't heard good things about their intakes...Yes i know "SEARCH", but i'd like a fresh opinion if possible

 

AFE ProDry S. Unless you're going with the URD CAI (I don't like the "out in front" design), I see no great advantage in having a CAI since the stock system IS a CAI. Removing the secondary filter and adding a high flow filter like the AFE would be fine.

yep........go with an afe pro dry s......good results have been had with it. and skip on the intake............waste of $$ as far as im concerned, since they do their best in the upper rpms, and they are expensive as hell.........you'll see better results with a drop in!!

 

yeah you know i've been reading alot about the CAI kinda being a waste...that's why i was in no hurry to get one, other then the sound and looks, i haven't heard much more good about them...yeah i did in fact remove my secondary filter a few months back...i am also leaning toward the afe pro dry, mainly since i don't wanna mess with oiling and such...now can i get that drop in at auto parts stores, or only online?

 

im pretty sure you will need to order it online. we had a group buy here a little while back, but im not sure if its over or just what the deal is. most local stores only have the k&n filters.

 

I've had several K&N drop-ins without any problems. You either like 'em or ya hate 'em. I'm currently running an AFE dry-flo drop-in filter.

Either one is washable and high flowing. They should increase your gas mileage by a scosch.

 

I just switched from a K&N to one that just came on the market from Amsoil.
Since I use their lubricants I decided to try their air filter. (No oiling)

 

a local auto parts store in town special ordered the afe for me today...it's gunna be about 65 bucks...only problem is, is that they told me 7-10 days to get it in, and i'm leaving in exactly 7 days for my 1300 mile trip...i was hoping i would get it before then ...anyways thanks for your help guys...

 

^Yeah, the Amsoil is also a dry filter much like the AFE or AEM Dryflow, though more expensive.

 

Ok..someone clue me in here.. do I also need to remove the second filter? don't flame me now but this was the 1st I've seen this!
Then again..this is the 1st truck I've owned with 2 air filters.

Its all an emissions thing, the secondary filter is there to "neutralize harmful gases trying to escape from the intake after you shut the truck off". Total BS if you ask me, anyways, you dont have to remove it but most people will tell you that theres a mild improvement in MPG and throttle response. I removed mine a few months back and cant really vouch for the differences before and after. But, i will mention that my best trip MPG according to my SG2 was after i removed mine so it may in fact helped a bit. its a very very minor difference.

 

I have the AFE Pro Dry and the other day I vacuumed it with a good suction and a brush attachment to get into the groves. It is also eco -friendly as you can wash and reuse it over and over and the vacuum cleans it 85-90% clean in between. They cost about 2 times a new regular one does($45-50)...Rich

 

I live in California. Does removing the secondary air filter cause problems with the emissions testing????.Rich

 

Where is the 2nd filter located? I have yet to take a look under the hook of my truck.

its right behind the main airfilter in the airbox. unhook 2 clamps, and the door will open for access.

 

so i looked at the 2nd filter today in my truck, whats the easiest way to cut the rivets or the right tool to use i dont want to get anything in the intake since ive only had the truck for 2 weeks now

 

you can use a screwdriver to pop the rivet heads off......or take the intake ox off completely, and then do it.....then there is no chance of the rivets staying in the intake. real easy to take off man.

 

yeah i need to look at it some more i just un hooked it today just to look at the 2nd air filter im sure i can figure out how to take the intake off, just dont want to mess up my brand new truck

 

nah....you wont mess it up man. just remember....small hose in the rear of the intake, you need to slide it off, and also unhook the maf sensor on the front of the intake, then there are a few bolts, and it'll come off. also....gotta unscrew the clamp that holds the hose to the throttle body.
