Interesting, thank you for this information.

I called T. Corporate today and same info as a few weeks ago, "remedy mid-June", whatever that means. It's mid-June now.

I think they are preparing for the fix and seeing how many trucks (at least the ones that have been discovered) they have that are waiting. He wanted to know the mileage on my truck.
So far Livermore Toyota has treated me great and I know he'll get me in as soon as it's possible. Stay tuned......

I finally crawled underneath, no signs of leak. Torqued nuts, got almost an 8th of turn on three. The remainder were good.

Today makes my 29th day. I called my Service Adviser to see as to when an estimate of when my truck will be release, first thing he says is "We're not legally allowed to hold onto your truck, you are free to take it back at anytime, but as soon as you drive off our lot all warranties are voided." Then he proceeds to talk me into trading it in for a new 4Runner, saying he has a couple of other guys trade in their defective Tacomas for 4Runner. So, out of curiosity I tell him, give me a quote of my truck, and so he hands me off to the Sales Manager who takes an hour to come back with the offer of 28K. I quickly say "No, I'll go ahead and proceed with the Hawaii Lemon Law Process, and you'll be receiving my Letter of Formal Complaint towards the Dealership and to Corporate. Thank you." I literally stormed out. I get a call 5 minutes later and the Service adviser apologizes and tells me to not send the letter and that he will put me in a Tacoma loaner first thing tomorrow. I tell him, I'll pick up the Tacoma Loaner at 10am and that my lawyer has advised me to send the letter no matter the circumstances. He also told me that Sundays are not Working Business Days, so we can't count those.

Well finally some common sense has arrived.

A seep is not a leak!

But seriously, if you look at most (older) engine bays, you’ll most likely see some oil seepage around the valve covers after some miles or yrs of service, and some ppl clean the engine bay and some don’t.
But no one ever cleans their rear differentials right? Hehe!.

That’s all this is to this, with the exception that’s it’s happening to a new truck because the fasteners were not torqued properly. End of story.

All will be good, sleep well, I know I have.
    Cheers!

A seep is a leak, albeit slow one. Not normal on new vehicles.

My company has a Legal Team, I ran everything through them before I went into the dealership, so I was well prepped. We'll see what happens next, I'll have to call corporate and prepare a Formal Complaint and go ahead and have that mailed out.

2016 Tacoma SR5 double cab here in North Carolina, been at dealer since middle of May for the differential leak. Was told expect truck fix mid June. Well I called and now saying mid July. Called corporate and basically getting same info. They really have no idea when the fix will be. I gave them a pretty hard time and yes they do realize they have a lot of angry owners out there. I suggested since apparently the new vehicles off the line have a fix, why not rob parts and repair the current owners vehicles? Got no answer on that one. This is bad customer service and I am not likely to purchase another Toyota. Was considering a Lexus (Toyota) but now may be looking at Acura for my wifes next vehicle. I hope corporate that you are reading these posts.

The answer is simple, Toyota is a publicly held company, it is pretty easy to hide recall costs, expenses and stretch them out over a long period of time to avoid cutting into each quarterly profits. But to shut production down and stop sales is a huge issue, that shows up immediately on the quarterly earnings report.

In the world of Wall street, it is much better to spend a 1000.00 in a year than 100.00 in a month.

Toyota DOES NOT CARE about exiting customers, they only care that the public perception is that they Care. Toyota Care was a direct result of the unintended acceleration fiasco they had.

If nobody was threatening legal action, Lemon laws etc. They still would be keeping your trucks hostage.

Money is the only thing that motivates Toyota and that is pretty much the same as any Wall Street company. What affects their decision making is when stock prices start dropping. For that to happen, sales have to drop, or media coverage, class action lawsuits etc.

Another way to put it, if the rear ends were leaking and the carrier damage would have zero effect on control of the vehicle, they wouldn't have a recall out. They would take their chances on fixing the ones that grenaded under warranty and hope the others went past the 6 year 60K warranty.

Yes, I am well aware of that. My statement was mostly tongue and cheek to make a point. There is apparently a fix as I have read a trade puclication that says all new 2017 Tacomas off the line are fine. So Toyota's claim of no fix which is what I got from speaking to them yesterday does not hold water.

Yeah, I tend to agree with others that the fix on new units is a redesigned substantial component, and Toyota is wanting to avoid a very expensive replacement in favor of a cheaper option. To give a hypothetical example, replace the gasket and visually check some internals rather than replace the entire rear diff assembly with the newer version. (Made up example)

ETA: I guess I should change my TacomaWorld equipment description above to my dealer rental while my truck's parked waiting for this fix....

Yep, when I mentioned that to the rep on the phone all was quiet. No answer to that and I believe you are right. They most likely have redesigned the differential and do not want to replace those on recall but try to rig a "quick" fix.

Yes... a leak is fluid getting outside it's intended container. In this case, the rear diff. Just because it was "normal" to some folks does not make it Ok. Weeping/seeping/whatever you want to call it is fluid getting past the gasket and going outside the rear diff. It's leaking...

    Common sense... really??

I kind of doubt the solution is a redesigned differential. I'm thinking this is the same rear diff they have been using forever no? An older ARB locker fits in this thing (ARB RD132?).
