When I get text scams I always reply " if you send pics of your mom naked with the check I'll let it slide and we can do the deal that way. If not then I need cash!! " never get many responses!!

What a crazy bitch. I actually had the opposite thing happened to me.

Sold my stock 265/65r17 tires off the Tacoma to a guy with a Dodge 1500. Near the end of the transaction we're BS'ing and he was like "Oh! What's the load rating?" Me:"I have no idea, but my truck can tow 6500 pounds so they'll probably work for your truck."

He texts me the next day saying no one will mount them on his truck because they're Standard Load, and if anyone else was interested in buying them (that he could contact). I apologized, said no, and we both carried on with our lives. Cool dude.

Only thing more sketch than a check is using Western Union as a back up plan. There's a reason Craigslist specifically says not to use money orders or checks as forms of payment.

    cashiers checks? :notsure:

Ive had people offer to pay with check - I then tell them I would only accept a cashier's check from a well known bank.

I've had my share of fun with scammers here and there.

Awhile back my sister was looking for a car on CL. Right before she was about to pull the trigger, she asked me to go over the agreed price and look at the car to make sure it was a good deal.

Thank god she reached out to me - or she would have been out of $8,000...

The craigslist ad was a car for sale, in a shipping container.

He was selling it because he couldn't keep it and was based in Germany for military duty, blah blah blah.

I started talking to the guy and told him that I would agree with the purchase IF he provided the following:

    1. A picture of his driver's license - front and back.
    2. A Skype conversation to verify that the guy on the DL was him.
    3. He claimed the car was dealer serviced - I wanted a copy of all the dealer records with dealer name, car VIN, and HIS name on the records.
    4. A copy of all the paperwork that verified the vehicle was in fact, being shipped
    5. That my friend, also on that same German Base, visit with him to discuss the sale and verify that he is a legit individual.

    Never got a reply.

Read the scam warnings on CL. They describe pretty much exactly what you said. I got the same text last time i tried to sell something. I figured out that you dont post your number where it asks for it. Put it in the description part and use words instead of numbers for you phone#.

Fortunately, I have had really good luck with everyone on here. People have sent parts before I sent a check and vice versa. I am glad the TW community is pretty honest.

I've only bought 2 things off CL. First was my motorcycle, that was a pain just because I needed a bank loan to buy it. But he was cool and worked with me on what my bank needed.
2nd a used cap. I paid cash for it, but the guy forgot to.mention the fact that he didn't have the mounting hardware till I drove 4+ hrs round trip to buy it. I ended up saving $500 from his asking because of the hassle though.

All throughout college I've been buying and selling motorcycles on craigslist and auctions, kind of like a side hobby. Lots of weirdos and scammers on there. The only way you do deals with people on craigslist is to meet them in a public place like a gas station or parking lot, and only accept cash.

Found a great deal on a 2014 Camaro SS about a year ago. Guy was asking like 7k below KBB. Was selling due to a "medical emergency". I was really skeptical, talked to the guy once, and decided something fishy was going on and ended the conversation. A few days later I see another post by some dude in Wisconsin saying how he bought the same exact Camaro from the guy, and just found out it was stolen from a dealership.

The buyer didn't worry about transferring the title? Haha! He is SOL there, financial natural selection.

Its not just the buyers who are crazy....

I went to a guys house to look at a car. He invited me in to discuss price. His house was WAY too clean. Looked like a movie set, everything was PERFECT. I made it 3 steps inside the front door when I see he has a dining room table with 2 fully dressed mannequins. A female in a long red dress, sitting, and a man in a tuxedo serving her or taking her dinner order. It was creepy as fawk. I walked backwards towards the door telling him 'no thanks, gotta go'....he texted me for 3 days after, kept lowering the price and telling me how 'attractive' Id look in his car. Im pretty sure he was going to try and cook me and eat my brains.

The way it was explained in the ad was that this scam artist purchased the car from a dealership in Iowa with a bad check, brought it here to Chicago, and sold it for cash on craigslist. The thing that sucks was that the victim was stuck with $17k hole in his pocket and having the give the car back to the dealer.

Seems that I can't change the title of the thread to Craigslist Scams, but if a moderator wants to, that's fine with me.

The reason that I brought up WU, was that I figured that this guy WAS a scammer, so I threw it right back at him.

Last month, I had a topper for sale on CL, off the Ranger that I had for sale. It was listed for $250. Guy calls me and asks if I'll take $200? I said that you have to see the topper first, then we'll talk. After a couple more rounds, he says he'll come and look at it. He likes it, then asks if I'll take $200. I say how about $225...he agrees. Didn't have the right change, had $230. I said that I'll get change from the house, he says forget it and keep it.

Similar with the Ranger. Had it on CL for $7500 obo. Guy offers $6k. I turn him down, said I'd take $6900. He said that he had a budget for his sons truck, and it was $6000. Sorry.
Then I listed it on ebay, and he saw it there. All of a sudden, he had $6600 to spend. He ended up paying $6700. He got a damn nice dependable truck.
