The rear bumper Chrome has cracked and bubbled in a fairly isolated area over the past winter. The rest of the bumper is in great shape.
I thought about touching it up using "Chrome" paint but for the most part I didn't care for the results from the few videos I watched.
So, I'm considering removing the chrome in the "step" area and applying bed-liner such as Rust-Oleum Truck Bed Coating.
I'm just curious if how others may have dealt with this issue or their experience with spry bed liner.Rear Bumper.jpg

I just removed the old rusted bumper and made a new one.

Once the winter chemicals get under the chrome it is just a matter of time till it all looks like your spot

I just installed a replacement bumper. Sprayed fluid film in all areas where water and salt can get to, plan on doing several times a year to prevent the bumpers from rusting from inside out as they typically do.

    How much can you spend?

Get a drill mount paint and rust remover to rough up the chrome and sand it smooth before repainting with whatever finish you choose.

You may need a metal grinder attachment if the rust is real deep.

    For the money...
I took my rusted after market bumper to a friend who sandblasted and powder coated it.
Powder coating, if done right, is a very durable finish.

    See my bumper below.
You can see the slight rust pitting that the sandblasting did get out.
We would have had to either bondo or arc weld new metal into the bumper and sand it down to get a completely smooth finish.
The overall powder coating came out good though this picture does not show it.

I've got about 3 projects ahead of a new bumper. I've see a few powder coat jobs that look good. I think I'll just grind it off and and cover the area with bed liner. I might get a quote on a powder coat.

Sounds like you no longer want chrome.

Generally, the DIY spray "bedliner" you get in a rattle can suck. They have to thin it out so much to be able to get it to spray, that it's basically just thick black paint.

Get an angle grinder from Harbor Freight (if you don't have one already) and some grinding and sanding disks and go to town on the WHOLE bumper. Then paint it with Hurculiner (you can buy them in quarts). Use a regular paint roller if you want a smoother finish than the rollers that come in the kits.

There was a recent thread here about wood bumpers, so another alternative is you take this one off and replace it with a 2x6... :)

I'll replace it with a chrome bumper eventually. Right now, the best deal I've found on a chrome bumper, with shipping, handling and new hardware is just over $400.00. I'm just looking for a cheaper option that looks good to get me by until I finish some other projects on it. The shocks, wheels and a new finish on the cab have higher priority in the budget right now.

Herculiner and other types of brush on bedliners are great if applied to a rough surface.

Just be sure to use the whole can (which is a lot) in one go or else it will dry out. And don't expect to read that on the can or get good customer service from Herculiner. But they do make a good product that would work well for your application.

Looks like a scratch that made it through the chrome and now water is getting under and is causing rust. Once it starts it's pretty tough fixing it and having it look good. Good luck not too many ways to fix it without costing a pretty penny!

    Pretty much stock right now
Your '04 chrome bumper lasted this long? Mine OEM is long gone, and the black ones not looking so good after four winters. Bumpers suck.
