Have you ever driven a 2014+ Grand Cherokee eco diesel? 1800 RPM is where the torque kicks in. Google the torque curves, it's a fact.

That downshifting takes precious seconds off acceleration that didn't need to be waisted if the transmission would just stay in the appropriate gear.

Lots of gears ultimately suit diesels better than gas engines. Diesels have narrower power bands than gas engines but are extremely efficient in that powerband. Lots of gears lets you stay in the sweet spot.

My wife has a 2015 GC Ecodiesel. The torque peak is at 2,000rpm so the closer you stay to that, the better. I usually rev it to about 2400 taking off and it goes effortlessly, never hunts for gears, and get high 20mpgs. The ZF 8-speed is one of the best in the world, its pedigree of uses speaks for itself.

Once again, I don't believe the number of gears is the issue. It's the tuning of the transmission. Toyota could make the tranny behave differently but it might affect MPGs or might not be needed by a majority of owners.

Remember, TW ultimately represents a small number of owners, many of whom are enthusiasts and don't mind firmer shifts or a little MPG loss. A lot of people may want the tranny to act just like it does, maybe even a majority (or at least Toyota may think so).

It's not how many gears. It's ratios.

My GS has a 2GR and a 6 speed trans.

The Taco with 2GR and 6 speed trans does not even feel close. it's like toyota specifically said "no, we're going to make this alot more coarse" even tho it's the same shit.

test drove a ram with the 10 speed and the thing would search for gears badly. also test drove a Camaro with a 10 speed and it gracefully caught every gear even when you punch it the thing takes a nano second to put you in the right gear. honestly don't think truck trannys have figured out how to use more than 6 gears yet

Aisin makes transmissions for lots of vehicles. Toyota is the major share holder.

This behavior isn't only in higher speed transmissions. I had a 2001 RAV4, around here near the Chesapeake bay where I live it is very flat and it was great. As soon as I would go through some mountains while using cruise it would downshift sometimes to 2nd gear going 70 mph. I had wished that the cruise was adjustable where you could set it to lose speed rather than downshift. That little 2.0 with the 4 speed sounded like an angry bee when it downshifted into 2nd trying to climb a mountain at 70 mph.

My Ford Fusion has a 6 speed with a 2.5L and for the most part the transmission behaves well, except going down the mountains while in cruise control, it downshifts to keep me from gaining speed, sometimes down to 3rd.

My 600 cc Honda Silver Wing "scooter"--with some CVT mods-- will smoke most Harleys (the look on their face is priceless), and hold it's own vs many 600 cc "sport" bikes. The various 650 V-Twin Jap "cruisers" stand no chance against the CVT.

As modified, and after the centrifugal clutch locks up, opening the throttle brings the engine up to 6k rpm; smack dab on top of its torque peak, where it stays until 85 mph or so--and then climbs to the HP peak at 95 to 100 mph...

What they should have done is stroke out this 3.5L to 4.0L and put it in the 3rd gen. And they would have had a better base engine for the Tundra then the old 4.0L.

Well there you have it, a decent sized engine with a 6-speed transmission because it's nice and in 6th gear you can get some realistic fuel economy gain--not an undersized engine with a 6-speed tranny because it needs it...
