So the "I hate the 5-speed Auto" thread ends up being a bunch of 2nd Gen owners who don't hate their 5-speed autos.....

    Womp womp.

I wish my transmission shifted firmer, I don't like the "soft" shifting it does, it just feels wimpy and car-like to me. I do realize this is intentional though.

Noooo, it looks like everyone loves them, except for the few Canadian protesters.

EDIT: This is a prime example of 2nd Gen behavior vs. 3rd Gen behavior.

Agreed. As I similarly posted elsewhere, I owned a 2017 Tacoma, 6 speed auto. All I can say is, be very glad you have the 2nd Gen. The 3rd Gen is not only shift happy, but non-responsive to pedal inputs. They're on their 2nd TSB for shift enhancements and have one aftermarket shift controller, none of which address the responsiveness.

OP might have some underlying issues with his auto. I love mine,no issues at all.

A good friend of mine has a 2014 LB sport V6 auto and me and my brother in law have 2012's SB sports and by no means would I say that I hate the transmission. However in all honesty after driving all three I feel the transmission can be very clunky and have weak shifting points under certain circumstances. Every Tacoma i have owned (3) have had a noisy drivetrain, the 98' SR5 V6 Auto (120K miles) was by far the quietest, next quietest was the 03' TRD Offroad V6 Auto (125k miles) and the least quiet is my 12' (43K miles). When I purchased my 2nd gen new after about 10K I started noticing the tranny shifts and noise but after driving at least 4 different used Tacos from friends and family I realized there is nothing wrong with any of them. ...Just the nature of the beast. I am a realist and as much as I love the Taco it doesn't change the fact that they are a noisy (drivetrain/engine/suspension) vehicle by nature. I know there are people who are going to want to burn my home down for the last statement but hey nothing is perfect in life...not my fault. I will continue to drive and buy new Tacoma's because I love them regardless of their quirks...and in the end their longevity far outweighs any of their short comings. No offense to the OP but you have to learn to deal with the things you don't like about your truck or sell it...

The only complaint concerning my Tacoma is the downshift after I have stopped at a red light. Doesn't do it all of the time. My wife's 4runner has the same drivetrain and has never done this.

Strange....I find the tranny in my '15 Sport flawless. Shifts are quick and smooth. It down shifts very readily when needed. Never bucks or hiccups at all.

Under light throttle it does tend to find the highest gear it can. But that's by design. The 4.0 has enough torque to compensate under most low load situations. If I need a lower gear....it's just small push of throttle away....boom....quick, smooth downshift. :notsure:

The power train, in general, is the best feature in my particular rig. No complaints at all. Do wish I had the 6 speed manual, as that's all I've ever really driven until this truck. But it is what it is....and I have no regrets with the slush box

With the amount of equity I have in the truck now, a trade is not out of the question. It's unfortunate because I know Toyota can design a better transmission.
