Drained my transmission fluid and replaced with Redline MT90 at 168k miles. Shifts smooth as butter again!

Pretty good! It's not a humongous difference but it is definitely smoother, and worth the cost of two quarts of oil.

My Clutch is buttery smooth, I just wish it engaged a little lower.

I am confused. How does changing the transmission oil affect the clutch? Putting MT90 in mine definitely smoothed out the shifting and I agree it is worth the cost of 2 qts of redline, but not sure how it could affect the clutch.

I dunno either. I'm just agreeing that shifting in general is smoother.

I wasn't trying to imply that his oil change would affect the clutch. I was just asking if his clutch felt good too.

 Looks good. Hope you had fun learning to wrap. It will help protect your paint from fading and minor scratches, be careful when washing and remember to keep an eye on the wrap for any lifting edges, dirt can get in there and act like sand paper on your paint.

Hey, does anyone else in their 3rd gen with the 6spd have clunking when pressing the clutch in. It will on depression just not nearly as bad. I'm assuming it's driveline slack but it's driving me crazy. And yes I am an experienced manual driver and know how to shift properly.

Anyone else with this issue or know what is causing the clunking please help!!!

Glad you asked this. I get that all the time when going from 1st to 2nd mostly. I think the sudden torque loss causes the driveline to speed up suddenly.

Yeah i get it 1st to 2nd, 2nd to 3rd & 3rd to 4th worse than the higher gear changes. I was afraid the diff is out of spec or something is off. I'm hoping it isn't something major. I've tried pressing the clutch slow, fast, everything... but nothing helps. It seems to be worse when it's hot.

Also wondering if changing the rear diff fluid to something thicker might help?

I've drove manuals my whole life and can't imagine a Toyota having this much slop in the driveline!

I usually let off the gas and wait half a second before I press the clutch. That usually prevents the clunk.

Okay I'll start trying that! So I'm guessing what I'm experiencing is normal for these tacomas?!

I can't speak for everybody but it is a normal characteristic for my truck.

    Hey All -
I've looked through this thread (not all 258 pages), and wondering if anyone with a Gen 3 6MT has experienced this issue: Over the weekend in Denver, I made a couple runs up into the mountains. Lots of 3rd/4th gear stuff with RPMs up around 3,500. After about 45-50 miles, I could not shift my truck without putting some muscle into it. Clutch felt fine, but if I rev matched from 4th to 3rd, I had to pull really hard to get my truck to get into gear. This was for all the gears, btw -- even slow stuff from 1st to 2nd.

    Details of the trip:
    - Pretty hot out, so 85-90 degrees
    - Only happened after 40-50 miles of driving
    - Happened three times (made 4 trips up the mountain, only time it didn't happen was on the way back down in the morning)
    - When I got to the campsite, shut off the truck, turned it on, and it shifted smooth while sitting still
    - Truck: 2016 TRD OR, Purchased 15 months ago brand new. Currently has 8,500 miles on it. Had it in for multiple routine services. (I work from home, hence the mileage)

Anyone experience anything like this? I've owned five Tacos, all manual, and this is a first for me.
I know if I take it to the dealer, they will say they can't recreate this issue, so I thought I would ask here first.

Thanks and I really enjoy this forum way too much.

Very well documented issue. There is a TSB involving dropping the transmission and replacing a ball detent in the shifter assembly. Go to your dealer.
