    That wheel that failed had pretty thin spokes. Now the driver claims the wheel failed causing the crash but it's possible the wheel failed in the crash. The spokes on the Toyota rim above appear more robust than the one in the flipped thread.

    nope. not a donut spare. its a 16" subaru steelie, with a 195/60R16 winter tire on it, and the second is what was left of the steelie on my cavalier that failed at speed. Steel wheels are incredibly fragile when subjected to any kind of side load, forged alloy wheels are a lot stronger, provided they dont have super thin spokes.

    and stock rim failure isnt very common until you start putting 35's on 16" wheels and then you have issues. or super low profile tires and go full hoonigan.
