Thud from rear end

When coming to a complete stop and physically stopping I hear a thud from the rear end. I start driving again then stop and hear the thud. It can be heard and felt throughout the whole truck. I took it to 2 dealers and they said the 2 piece drive shaft is bottoming out and causing the noise. They lubed the drive shaft with no help. They said it's a known issue with Tacomas with higher mileage and there is no fix. A toyota mechanic went as far to say that his 07 does the same thing. Does anyone else have this noise?? I'm not sold on the drive shaft bottoming out. If that was the case then when I lift the truck it will go away. HELP!!!

 

Take the shaft out of your rear end and it will stop bottoming out

I have a 2008 with 8k miles on it, and I've had the "thud" since I drove it off the lot. I don't know what it is or why it does it, but I haven't had any other problems with it. It's just a little obnoxious. Mine happens about 1-2 seconds after I have completely stopped. Anyone have an idea?

 

I sometimes feel a light klunk after sitting at rest for a couple seconds. I played it off to freeplay in the diff gears or something normal from the trans from coming to a stop. But like I said it's real light.

 

Mine is the same, very light but noticeable. More irritating than worrisome.

 

Are Tacoma's don't like to sit still, that's all it is.

 

agreed, it's more of a kick in the ass from our pickups than a "thud"

It is a common thing....search for the word "lurch" in the forums.

 

im gonna say that this is called "axle wrap", and with the weak springs....its alot more pronounced. when i had my 06....i had bad axle wrap....but got the rear leaf tsb, and it was gone.

 

+1 for axle wrap. Had the same problem on my 06. TSB took care of it, hasn't happen since. (sorry for the rhyme)

 

Well I'm the 2nd owner and out of warrantee for the Leaf springs. Any suggestions on a fix? If I just add a signal rear leaf spring (i guess a 2 inch lift) that would fix the issue?

 

an add a leaf would fix the problem i believe.

Suspension TSB isn't the cure all, if that's what you guys are implying. I still have it (the lurch). My guess is that it's due to the way the automatic transmission decides to downshift, but now the manual transmission guys have this too?

 

I'm sitting under 5k miles, no accidents, all but 10 miles are highway/in town driving (the 10 is through some snow and two easy trails at a 4wd park where I went less than 15mph), I drive with a light foot... So I doubt it's anything I'm doing wrong. If so, my 3rd gen Accord has more balls.

 

something you may want to check.......as my 06 had some of the "lurch" characteristics also.........get the dealer to check the transmission fluid level. mine was a quart low from the factory, and when they added the needed quart, it quit with what it was doing. just a thought.
