Do you have multiple degrees? Security clearance? A pilots license? Do you "red team go" with only the FINEST of operators? If so, welcome back.

Talk to Toyota and maybe with your engineering degree maybe you can redesign the engine.

WTF? Serious?? Not sure if this is the way you welcome new members but if it is its not a good way. i just registered a week or so ago as i just purchased a trd sport, came from a focus st, where i did tuning for, then from a dart . I am a unichip tuner and have a desktop cnc , 3d printer as my hobby. I see new guys are not welcome here then...

    Welcome to TW, Vic.
TW is a great forum, as you will see if you can hang in.
I have been here awhile and see sometimes a new member having a rough start, but don't take it personally. There are thousands of members, and I am sure you are going to fit in here just fine.
    Hopefully you get my drift.
I always have respect for any member trying to create something, I think most of the other members feel the same way.

Air induction from hood scoops rarely benefits any car, let alone a naturally aspirated truck.

The biggest problems are tuning around air flow based on vehicle speed, which is very inconsistent. The amount of debris/dirty air/water that his the filter. Chevy has a new hood that has special ducts to combat this.

Any functional hood scoop you see is for top mount intercoolers, they need the air flow and can't be mounted on the bumper due to collision requirements.

Hood vents would benefit our trucks more than the scoop.

There's a lot of dumb in this thread. The man is talking about a cowl induction hood, google it. No where did he say scoop.

Welcome @gentzleon, sorry for the momentary collective brain lapse.

    • Ya see, stun gun , if you go to college, you can learn these kinds of things, and the business and liberal arts guys, well, they can read it out of carmagazines. :D :D

Cowl induction takes advantage of something that is otherwise all bad. The windshield deflects air flow coming over the hood up and over the top of the car. This causes aerodynamic drag, but fluid flow being what it is, it also creates a region of high static pressure at the base of the windshield, where the relative flow velocity is essentially reduced to zero. This converts all of the dynamic pressure or energy in the flowing air into increased static pressure. Since this increased static pressure is higher than the static pressure under the hood, the air from the base of the windshield can flow forcibly under the hood to the carburetor venturis if a properly designed channel is available.

Cowl induction is superior to hood scoops. Hood scoops are for "show", cowl induction is for "go". Even if you "ram" the air through the limited open area of the hood scoop, you still have to have some kind of efficient plenum device that will declerate the flow and convert the dynamic pressure into static pressure which is the only thing you can really use anyway. Cowl induction is a way of taking something negative (parasitic drag) and turning it into a positive (cool, high pressure air at the carburetor) with no additional expenditure of energy. :smash:

Its just some good ole TW humor. Stick around and you will not only see what it is, you will slowly become part of it. Welcome to TW and continue with your ideas.
It's a funny story behind the pilot/ranger/engineer, and if you hang around someone will fill you in, until then, dont let a few guys messing around deter you from your ideas. When you come up with something that gives these trucks some more balls these same people will be opening up their wallets to you.

That's most definitely not the official welcome. And I should never be allowed to give an official welcome without adult supervision. I apologize, stupid smartass remarks don't come across well when the op has no idea what I'm talking about. If I WERE to welcome you, I would give you a big ass hug because not only did you choose a Tacoma, but you came to this site, AND you're building something. It really is inspiring when someone chooses a toyota pickup over the domestic offerings.

    Welcome to TW,

First, :worthless:. Second, this is how it works at TW. You join and get pissed that folks appear to big asswhipes, then you Alize there are good folks that just like to give others shit and before you know it you are also giving folks shit cause it's the TW way. Most every one around here loves to see new mods for the tacos.

    Enjoy.

That will be interesting to see.

Consider the following why your 'welcome' may have seemed a bit harsh.

    1) you have no previous rep here. You just roll in and say 'I'm here'. Like we are supposed to tremble in awe.

    2) you don't use the correct name for the parts you plan to modify

    3) you don't state any project premise, like how you think a functional scoop will actually improve anything

    Little stuff like that.

    Now, with that aside.............

A functional scoop, with actual results other than 'open and close' would be interesting.

Consider for your ease of design that rest of the world Hilux have a functional scoop from the factory. At least on the turbo diesel models. Thing is, the innercooler lays on top of the engine, and that's what the scoop serves. Pretty slick actually.

So you might look at those to see how they work.

Also, keep in mind that you'll never get a 'ram air' effect on an EFI vehicle. This isn't a '60s bit of American Muscle cramming carbs. The best you can hope for is ambient air. Which is good. Except this vehicle already draws ambient air via the fender, right?

Anway, looking forward to seeing the function you develop with your work.
