Those things are all over down here.

I parked my truck for about 6 hours to run a mini-excavator and came back to this. After I got it going it cooled down to 108.

Yeah I do not think that has much to do with it lol Aircraft did not collide big ass BOATS did a bit different lol . Airplane motors, pilot fail there is only one thing that is guaranteed to happen gravity wins every time . Physics says a mass in motion tends to stay in motion unless acted upon by an outside force friction etc . You have a little more room for screw ups in a boat as long as nothing is in the way and no holes in the boat if the entire electro mechanical hydraulic etc system fail it will eventually stop with out hitting anything lol a plan not so much.

Other then the Navy ship being dead in the water no power no propulsion etc and the container boat on auto pilot with it's warning systems deactivated and every crew member asleep I can't get to a valid way for this to happen ..by accident...

All kidding aside I really just don't get how this can occur hence I asked the question.

unexplainable accidents can happen just as life saving miracles cheating death happens, I really am a critic of automation for this reason, but human error vs automated error is still an error with a grave consequence

lol thanks @Cypherian though I am only 31 currently, it's the topics in this thread that are seemingly more sensible at times so worth the lurking while behind the desk!

I am following the thought @Chile Verde is going with the damage being on the bow and the damage starboard side of the respected vessels. Though nothing is ever for certain either, I am no pro but I do know as fact many container vessels run on auto pilot while in open waters.

I saw that last night it came across one of the Navy chain emails. At the time they had no idea of loss of life or damage except to say that it was taking on water but not sinking.

Too early to tell. Could speculate but until the investigation that is all it is. The 7 missing were more than likely on watch topside, that would make sense. We did an investigation in the Indian Ocean back in the 70's for a similar incident. There is a lot of ship traffic in that area of Japan but your supposed to always keep a cushion. In the Persian Gulf between Naval ships and merchant ships in Desert Storm it was a wonder there wasn't at least one collision, that "box" is pretty small.

The Captain of the ship is likely a Commander. Or was his career is over now. You have to start with tincans\small ships and work your way up. If you so much as run your ship aground your toast and it is the end of your career. Doesn't matter if it is 0200 and your in your rack sleeping and some Junior Officer is Officer Of the Deck and screws up. Ultimately it is your responsibility for training and performance of your crew. And you don't get to pick your crew.

Well sure there is. California in your rear view mirror.

Not till you get to Oregon. I-5 starts at the US/Mex border and runs all the way to the top of Washington state and there's a whole lot of California in there.

Your right merchant ships do run automated usually at 12 knots. It is for fuel economy and steady state steaming is more fuel efficient. And they burn a LOT of fuel so it makes a big difference in fuel consumption. They also go in straight lines as much as possible. Navy ships especially tin cans like the USS Fitzgerald often do boxes looking for subs. And change speed a lot. Standing joke was the shortest distance between 2 points on a tin can was as many boxes as you could make. Unless pulling plane guard duty behind a bird farm then your in the wake of the Aircraft carrier.

It's hard to say at this point what went wrong. I can only speculate at this point. I will say when you are at sea it is the darkest of all dark. you would be surprised what you can't see.
my favorite watch was Starboard bow low visibility watch. standing in the bow cat walk with binoculars looking for anything in the fog. you could only see about 1/2 mile but it takes 2 miles to stop.

Yep done it a few times between San Diego and Bremerton Wa. Grants Pass in Oregon in the winter they shut it down right in front of me. Was driving my FJ55 and the trooper looked at me and smiled and waved me through. He shouldn't have I didn't have chains with me that trip. Never forget that one and it was a long time ago.

And I can smell TJ just thinking about it LOL. Heard they paved the roads there now.

No worries on the age we let youngins in here as long as they play nice lol . Great bunch of guys well .. mostly LOL . Just make sure you have you big boy pants on there are no safe places here lol and your opinions on hot dog condiments, snack cakes and choice of hardware umm lol to remove youngins from the lawn will be tested. If you ask for a suggestion on any purchase from knives, vacuums, gun stuff, boots , truck mods etc be prepared for the most expensive suggestions your check book, credit card and any investments you might have HAD will be spent along with your future earnings lol.

I am aware lol via watching a lot of modern marvels and such and talking to a few merchant marine guys they run automated but they also have a LOT of warning systems both boats do so that is where the disconnect is in my wing nut mind .

Trust me planes have hit a lot of things you would not think they could stationary bldgs, trucks , poles, those were under the physical control of a college edumacated human lol though the damage was repaired by High School educated people lol .

The bow to broad side does say a lot just who is in the wrong Is the question. Though, knowing the military they will still hold the boat captain etc at fault even if it couldn't be his fault lol seen that movie more then once.

I expect the Navy is not unlike what I see in the active duty Air Force here. Not gonna rant or get political...I'll simply state, as a guy with almost 34 yrs of combined active duty and civil service Air Force experience, that today I only have solid confidence in about 30% of the young active duty force. Just 10 yrs ago, that percentage was somewhere around 75-90%. It's a different world out there today; hopefully it'll start hedging back in the other direction soon. ABORT RANT and "all I got to say about that." :(

    Small useful for me stuff.
The non free software was one of the reasons I don't care for the iPhone. I have to use one for work and will say they are easy to use. Don't try anything complex with them. Unfortunately it looks like they are set up to use the cloud and iTunes whether you want to or not. It's the Apple way. :frusty: :pout:

I don't know about TJ, only what I could over the fence. But the ports on Otay Mesa have changed. The I-5 port is still pretty much the same, but the truck port on 905 was expanded. Our office use to be next to the Brown Field Border Patrol station, directly north of TJ International Airport and it went through a bunch of expansions and changes. But I haven't been in that area since 09 when I retired.

We had to take the shit can up topside on the USS Robison at the end of the midwatch every night and dump it in the ocean. Was always full of heavy shit from the engineroom and took 2 people to do it. And had to call up topside to get permission that all was clear. We got permission one night and I was in the front and opened the hatch and walked out. Pitch black and happened to turn around and saw a florescent line about 10 feet up in the air coming at me. I yelled at the other guy and the wave slammed me into the ladder that thank goodness was in front of me. We both let go and lost the shit can but we didn't get washed overboard. We ran back to the engineroom soaking wet scared as hell and told Chief what happened. He was pissed as hell and told us we owned him another shit can and where the hell did we think we were going to get one in the middle of the ocean.

I was on a flight from brazil to the us a few years back and was using the bathroom, I looked down and found a shinny snap on box ended wrench on the floor corner near the back of the pisser... at the time I was also a tech at a subaru dealership and had previously left a wrench in a car... well at 30+k feet I said to myself mistakes happen to all sorts of "technicians" lol

check and balance failure is shitty.... hearing your opinions on the current capabilities of some of those enlisted is funny not funny.

needless to say, I kept that snap on wrench
