I had a Baja Turbo (the one pictured is N/A)

    It was a terrific vehicle.

I sold it just before it hit 200k miles and it was still running great.

I remember seeing the EV1s and other electrics on the road. Sadly politics killed off that leap forward.

You can still find the Ranger and RAV4 EV on the road.

Still electrics on the road. Honda has the fit EV, and Nissan has the leaf and GM has the volt. More than just politics. Not a lot of places have charging stations, and most electric vehicles are pretty ugly looking

I am talking about the originals from the 90s. It took 20yrs to overcome what the oil industry, big three, and politics did to the initial attempt to move towards EV.

I guess I am that old.... I remember the 90s.

Lol. I was just a kid in the 90's. But you're right. That was a huge leap in the 90s. pretty sure it was due to the invasion of Kuwait in 1990. Oil prices sky rocketed and the auto industry needed to act. That was one of the factors of the recession. so the EVs of that period were pretty much a direct result of that. They were drafted at that time and just take a few years to get into production

half of them are probably in California, the car-porn capital of North America... when I was a kid in SF, a neighbor street parked one of these daily... til some disgruntled client firebombed it...

It was actually something started by the State of CA. They passed a law saying that 10%(iirc) of cars offered for sale/sold in CA will be EV by 2000.

GM went out of their way to undermine and destroy what was actually very successful and viable market segment. Intern marketing team, self inflicted negative advertising, you name it.... they went out of their way to make it fail. Even with the wait list growing by the day... it was killed.

See documentary: "who killed the electric car"

I had two neighbors with EV1s and one with the RAV4 EV. The EV1 was shockingly enjoyable to drive.

Fun little trivia note. The Volt has a better coefficient of drag than even the corvette... took them two years to get it to be that slick. Pretty impressive till you realize the EV1 beats the Volt by a decent amount, but GM leadership was afraid of bringing back negative vibes if they copied the design features for the CA market... that and it was super 90s! Much of the country never saw or knew what the EV projects were.

A friend of mine also had one with a 400.
Done right, with the water jackets and heads taken care of, it was scary quick.

Roomate in college had a cavalier. It broke down so he parked it behind our apartment building. Some hoodlums decided it'd be fun to flip it over onto its lid. Roomate was bummed. Sold the car for scrap metal.

I'm guessing that's what most of the Japanese owners did once they realized what a POS it was. :D
