I saw that new engine on www.worldcarfans.com and they were talking about how it out did EVERY test they put it through.
Here is a Hilux front end...





I still want one of those with a D4D!

 

2GR ?? I guess that's different than the 1GR 4.0L in my truck? (other than being supercharged)

 

Guys, i know this is a stupid question and i appologize in advance, but what exactly is the deal with the "hilux", i know nothing about it

 

The HiLux was the truck that Toyota originated the Tacoma from. The Pre-Tacomas (<1994) are all actually designated as HiLuxes. The HiLux is sold everywhere else in the world. It now shares the same frame as the Tacoma, but it pretty much stops there. The HiLux is offered in the 2.7L gasser, 4.0L gasser, 4.0L supercharged gasser (as we see here), 2.5L D4D turbodiesel, and, (my favorite) the 3.0L D4D turbodiesel. It is an awesome truck.

Tacomas are designed off of the HiLux frame, but they are designed in California. The HiLux is designed in Japan. The Tacoma is only sold in the USA and Canada. Every other nation gets the HiLux. We may have the better looking truck, but they get the better engines and more advanced technology.

The USA and Canada have too many legal hoops that manufacturers have to jump through (most importantly for emissions). So it takes several years before we get something like a D4D engine. Even then, there has to be enough market demand for such a thing.

Don't get me wrong, the environment is an important thing to everyone, but we need to not have so much red tape. The rest of the world is way ahead of us in fuel economy and driveline technology.

Sorry for the long winded response - I want a HiLux pretty bad.

 

Thanks for the response 007, you cleared up some confusion for me, and now you have me wanting one pretty bad. the only thing that could part me from my Taco would be a Taco with a Diesel. What kind of output do those two diesel motors put out?

The engine produces about 253 lb/ft torque. It averages 28 MPG by realtime driving estimates (not EPA estimates).

Thats actually a little less torque than i was expecting. Thats less than what my gasser is putting out now. Aside from long life, is there a benefit from the diesels over the v6's if the v6 puts out more power?

 

I will be stationed in Tokyo in 2009 ( after my year in Korea) so i will let you guys know how the HiLux is! hopfully I can bring my Tacoma so i can have both!

 

Well to start - the 3.0L D4D engine is a 4 cylinder The V6 turbodiesels aren't called D4Ds. The 4 is the number of cylinders. The D4D is a lighter engine, the fuel economy is much better than a V6 gasser (~28MPG), and since it is a turbocharged engine - it is extremely customizable in its stock configuration.

Without major risk to the engine, you can push ~260 HP and ~360 lb/ft of torque. That is with an intake, exhaust, and a re-map of the ECU. These figures are from memory, but they are close.

That's it - no headers, no bigger turbo, no emissions tampering, etc...

 

Korea has the HiLux, and the Prado LandCruiser with the V8 TurboDiesel!!! - Can you say 2nd Gen Tundra???

Man, I hope we have an efficient TurboDiesel option by 2009! Even GM will have their 4.5L Duramax available in the Silverado 1500 and Hummer H2 by 2009!!!

Ah Mark you're singing my song again. If I could have that D4D turbo in my Tacoma body it would be bliss, maybe someday.

 

I don't believe so. I think you have to move up to the Land Cruiser Pickup to get that - even then, the V8 TD would be a better option...

I'm not quite sure where you got your numbers, but from this website the small D4D engine is 102 bhp & 300 NM (or 221 ft/lbs) and the large 3.0 D4D engine is 163 bhp & 343 NM (or 252 ft/lbs). This which means these engines are not nearly as stong horse power wise as you indicated above.

yeah, but you never get a diesel for the hp, its all about the torque baby! I would gladly trade hp for more torque

True, but the 4.0L V6 has 266 torque, so it still has more torque than either D4D turbodiesel.

Yes true but that can be easily fixed by reprogramming the computer or changing your mixture. I'm not sure about the D4D but I know on Fords, Chevys ect... you can get a lot more torque, HP and MPG with a simple programmer. Plus the D4D will last longer (not that I don't think the 4.0L won't last long but 100K is just breaking in most diesels) and gets much better mileage.
