truck: 2015 magnetic gray metallic regular/long bed
cap: ARE Cx with windoors and roof rack, and folding/slider front window. bought off craigslist few months ago, very clean cap, wrong color. after carefully removing all the hardware myself (windows, etc) took it to local body shop for repainting. he found the paint color swatches for the truck (there were about 10 to choose from within that code's category, all slightly different. he explained that because of slight variations in the factory paintjobs, this paint company offers slightly different formulas to choose from. i'm assuming this is legit? sounds reasonable.).
it seemed tricky to choose a swatch, but he seemed to hone in pretty quickly, so i deferred to him as the professional.
paintjob is done, and it doesn't match quite perfectly. everyone i've shown it to says it looks the same, but my eye is telling me 'no way'.
    really bothers my eye.

so........what are other's experience with paint match quality on new caps from ARE, Leer, or any other manufacturers?

i'm halfway considering selling my cap, to someone less discriminating as me i suppose. and buying a new one. but not sure i would necessarily end up with anything better color-wise.

would really appreciate opinions/experiences on this.

i'm in cincinnati, if anyone's interested in a really nice cap.

    Build thread coming soon!
As a collision industry professional, I can tell you that MGM is tough to match. There are at least 10 agreed "variants" (the swatches you saw him check) and countless more mixes for that color (PPG would call these "specials"...)
My truck is Spruce Mica and my cap was 1E7 silver when I bought it.. painted it myself using the closest variant that matched my truck. To my trained eye, it's definitely not a perfect match but to anyone else, they always ask how I was able to get it exactly right what with all the pearls in it.
Since a canopy manufacturer never actually gets to see the truck they're building one for, the vast majority don't match. Have a look when you go somewhere tomorrow - doesn't matter what kind of truck, if it has a shell chances are at least half of the ones you see will be off if you view them at just the right angle...

I had a Leer in MGM for my 2015 and the paint match was spot on. The dealer couldn't get it sealed and refunded my money. Ordered a ARE CX and the paint match for that was spot on too. New cap on a new truck.

Pics would help alot.....I just bought a used cap for my 17' MGM. It's a Leer and it was the same color, but when I put it on the truck it was waaay off. It has some damage to repair so I had to repaint it anyway. The shop that painted it said the same thing, many different shades of this color. They also warned that it would not be a 100% perfect match. Nonetheless I was happy with the results.

Not to me. It's close but it would really bother me too. Even the slight differences in the mgm flakes from the factory on my truck bother me in the right light but not much can do about that.

When I bought my MGM Leer cap, the dealer specifically warned me that the color was very difficult to match and I should not expect a perfect match. It did look very slightly off when I got it but I don't notice it anymore.
