You mean a different size tire ?

So a 2007 trd (6lug) vs a non trd (5lug) will have different tire sizes ?

    Tire sizes are completely different.
5 lug uses a tire a Honda Civic could run.

    6 lug is a truck/SUV tire.

Thanks ! I did not know that ! I'm new to trucks in general , I got my Tacoma in April and before that I've always had civics, celicas, Sentra's (i.e. Small 4 cylinder front wheel drive) so that's why I asked

    The stock 15" (5-lug) tires are P215/70-15, 8.5" (at best) tread width--the smallest 6-lug OEM tire is a P245/75-16 (9.6" tread).

OP, what have you driven in the past? As others have said unloaded pickup trucks are not known for their excellent wet road performance--"light in the tush" was put forth I believe...

I thought the 5 vs 6 lug was 2x4 vs 4x4 (except the poserrunner which is a 2x4 pretending to be a 4x4).

    It is marketing BS.

5-lugs are entirely enough to keep a wheel on a 4500 lb vehicle (or more--check out 5300 lb, mid-70s Cadillacs with 5-lug steel wheels)--BUT F-250s and -350s had 6 and 8 lugs and to make the Tacoma appear more "rugged" they went to 6-lug wheels for the higher end models.

My 347 HP, 165+ mph top speed, 4300 lb, '98 SL500 has (OMG!) 5-lug wheels and I do not for a moment feel unsafe in it (though the fastest I've had it going was 153.8 per a Garmin GPS):

Why are Tundras still only 5-lugs?

It's all the horsepower behind the 2.7 maybe? My 2.7 never had the issue of sliding.

Put some high performance summer tires (very good wet & traction at expense of tread life), shop on tirerack.com

They found a stronger lug to support it. It's stupid I know. Would have been easier to keep it all six lug

No not to "appear" more "rugged" , the sport model doesn't really need a extra lug (5 opposed 6) the OR has the 6 lug because of the locker where the sport model is just that a sport model , it doesn't need the extra lug because it doesn't have the locker option . The sport is more looks and the OR is more a functional package . The OR may possibly get away with a 5 lug. Who knows , I'm glad they added it to the OR model . I don't think it's totally marketing bs thou

I know nothing of Tundras--not certain I care to (were "full-size" pickups on my bucket list I'd be visiting a Ford dealer)--are they all 5-lug?

If so I "rest my case"...

Yep, appears Tundras are 5 lugs, although they are 14mm vs 12mm for Tacomas.

Huh, sort of validates my point--but the number and size of lug studs/nuts/bolts has always been grossly over-engineered...

When wet I can spin the tires easy. Even when I had a shell I accidentally drifted through an intersection while turning
