This will revolutionize the aftermarket for these trucks, should this pan out. Fingers crossed.

Whoa. OVTune, you're everywhere now! I'll be interested in a custom tune if it'll be offered... Will get a pic of my ECU when I get a chance to pull it out.

So is the ECU the vertical thing with all the wire connections to the right of the HVAC fan in this picture?

I'm interested in the ability to tune the throttle response. Hate the rev-hang on my 2010 6-speed. Also wondering if this allows data logging and storage of the various ECU inputs...

Me too, which is why I asked about cracking the ECU. Which was ignored BTW. If the ECU has not been cracked what is being promised is not possible IMHO.

Another thing, a lot of tuners are moving away from handheld tuner boxes, and going to say Android devices (smartphone or tablet). Eg I just flashed my 6HP21 tranny on my 335xi over the weekend with a new Android app from xHP (look them up), using simple/cheap OTG adapter and eBay CAN cable. I had the CAN cable from another reflashing project (INPA/NCSExpert if you are familiar). This could not have been done had the TCU not been cracked by these guys, or rather by a group of enthusiasts who cracked it, did the legwork to discover hidden tables etc. then decided to develop a product from it.

And BTW many "tuners"claimed to have cracked the TCU prior and were offering all sorts of handhelds to "reflash" your 6HP21. All scammers. What they did was collect all the available factory flashes and recalibrations (still encrypted) and offer them loaded onto a handheld module. For like $700. Complete rip off.

The other thing on ECU tuning in addition to Android type apps, lot of shareware/free stuff out there now that the factory BMW ECU has been cracked. You flash off a laptop, maps and software are free for what is known as the BimmerBoost flash (backend flashes meant to run in conjunction with a JB4 piggyback) or small fee (under $100) for the MHD android based flashes and software. The main handheld device (Cobb) which was again $700 or so, has fallen by the wayside as far better maps are out there for free or a fraction of that, and Cobb just stopped supporting it because nobody cared anymore, it had been superceded.

Finally there is something called TunerPro

    http://www.tunerpro.net/

Which is a free OBD2 software tool for messing with some types of ecu's, once they are hacked. I have messed around with it a little but it is beyond my present state of knowledge/needs.

I am NOT saying OVTune is a scammer, I am saying I'd like to know more about what they've done (and how they cracked the ECU) and why they picked a semi-obsolete handheld approach instead of Android or laptop based. Among other things.

We aren't offering faked CUW files loaded onto a handheld, that's disgusting that a company would even do such a thing. (we know of some that do even worse....... those "TCU flash modules" plug in and wait for a beep..yeah....)

We have a laptop flash option, the tools and license and software just cost more. Our handhelds are simply easier to use, while ultimately being less expensive. Developing an android app to reflash the ECU is possible, but there is a lot more risk involved, especially if the connection is wireless like bluetooth.

With toyota ECUs, if the flash fails at any time during the procedure, it's bricked. We can recover the ECU but only in our hands, not by OBD. It's simply too risky for these ECUs to be flashed with any way except an extremely stable connection.

I'm not in this business to waste anyone's time. If I was peddling garbage or fake products I wouldn't even be replying to this I would offer up some cheap junk, grab a bunch of sales an disappear. That's exactly what those types of businesses do.

Nobody is talking about flashing via Bluetooth, not sure where you got that. I am talking about flashing using an Android device and an OTG micro USB adapter, plugged into a standard CAN OBD2 diagnostic cable. With a cost for software and map license about $100 (or free for some), $40-50 for an eBay cable. Which is essentially identical to how you'd connect a handheld. Nobody is bricking their ECU's, if there is something special about Toyota's that cause this I'm all ears.

Oh yeah and about cracking the ECU, this is like the 4th time I've asked.

And one more thing, you'd really want to have before/after dyno plots for your maps for a variety of mods. Because if you're not using a dyno to tune, you're wasting our time. I certainly hope you're for real but the responses here leave a lot to be desired.

You cannot compare a product designed for BMW and apply it to Toyota. The ECU is absolutely nothing alike, and who would make that software license for $100 or cable for $40 or $50 that supports the protocol that is required to reflash a toyota ECU? Are you asking us to develop a solution and price it based on the price of a completely different product?

Yes there is a quite a bit of difference between a toyota ECU and whatever it is you are comparing it to. How much do you know about the toyota ECU and NEC processor? You simply cannot make a comparison.
There is something very special that toyota did with these ecus that require extra precaution when flashing. Am I going to explain it in detail? Absolutely not, that is not "free" information.

As soon as Renesas released the information (datasheet) on the Renesas V850 NEC variant MCU (microprocessor) it had all the necessary information to crack the processor.. it is literally typed out in black and white. The entire reason Toyotas ecus have never previously been cracked is because Renesas never made this information publicly accessible until just recently.
using this + exploiting techstreams flash methods through the can bus is all that is required. We work with two developers who have made this possible through reverse engineering toyotas OEM flash methods and NECs datasheet.

Why would I not use a dyno to tune. What a ridiculous statement to make.

So would this be preset tunes? Or something that allows you to adjust your own parameters?
