    That's too bad.

PS the motor is fine. The transmission and programming suck a big hairy one.

I don't doubt that a bit. I like good fuel mileage, but Toy needs to find a better way.

I just discovered they have the Pro-4X in King Cab that would give me the 6 ft bed. The back seat is worthless anyway and looks like it would save us $2000, gains a tiny bit of capacity over the 4 door, 100lb.

This is why the Nissan Frontier still sells after all these years no matter how elderly it is.

The Frontier is a true midsized truck with glorious low end torque and small size. Nissan shouldn't rush to update it.

Crud, I'd loose the premium stereo on the King Cab. Always a catch.

I don't think it's the double OD, it's just the OD gears are so stinking TALL. Your 5th is taller than my 6th. I'm not understanding the spacing.

I just take away 6th, run it in S5 with cruise on. It's only about 3-500 rpms higher than 6th so it's not like the engine is screaming by not hitting the higher gear at 70 mph. Truck still purrs along at 2k at that speed in 5th.

Over drive means less than 1 to 1 ratio.

Truck is almost always going to downshift twice from 6th to get out of overdrive since 5th and 6th are so close. It really is silly since the gains have to be marginal at best and leads to a lot of the shift happy comments.

I don't do anything when I drive normally, just put it in D and go. I find the truck is much smoother in 6th than 5th myself. RPM difference is minimal as you said, but the truck just feels better in 6th.

I feel the same but if I want to use cruise on undulating terrain I use S5, it takes away some of the shiftiness that the OP and many others complained about.

The truck is actually a pretty nice 5 speed when you configure it for that.

    I know.

Maybe tall is the wrong word. Short?

In the MT 5th is a 0.85, and 6th is 0.71. Coincidentally the 2nd gen AT 5th was also 0.71. Purred like a kitten.

    In the AT 5th is 0.69 and 6th is, I think, 0.55.

6th gear in the AT is useless.

0.55:1 to 1:1 is one heck of a drop. My 2011 only had to downshift on substantial grades. I wonder if they reconfigured it to drop into 5th if people would be so persnickety.

When I test drove an AT I admit I couldn't "feel" it hunt, but watching the tach jump around like a pinball flipper made me nervous.

Tach jumping 3-500 rpms is no concern to me, especially when it's below 2k. Just the way the truck operates at certain speeds and conditions. If you don't like it, reconfigure but I'm sure the transmission will last years without any reliability issues. If that's too much of a hassle then buy the MT (which to me is even more work to configure) or buy an auto from a different model / brand/ year more suited to your preference. Nothing actually wrong with the transmission, it just operates different than most. When you figure it out it really shines, if you don't want to bother and just wish it drove like every thing else you're SOL.

Some people have a problem with it, most do not.

Already bought the MT. Truck runs much better than I could have ever expected.

I tow a lot. It pulls a ton. Has no trouble holding speed in even in 5th at 70mph.

If I drove day to day around town, I bet the auto would be just fine.

    Probably.

I dont tow much but spent the weekend driving into the mountains of western VA, S5 in cruise at 70 -75 mph pulled up those inclines on US 81 without a problem.

I really seem to like the truck more as a 5 speed the longer I have it.
