I carry the first kit, a screw driver kit, and a few other items which take care of most of the things that I may encounter on the side of the road. Since I don't rock crawl and just dirt road travel and go across large fields, I keep my kit small. The ones shown in this thread are perfect for just that. Make sure you keep the smaller sockets as well as the bigger ones as well as wrenches.

nice little kit if you don't want much.
I've got a lot in mine under the back seat but mine is set up for trails/camping.
And I'm still missing some stuff.

I've got from 6mm-29mm sockets varies in 1/4, 3/8 and 1/2 drive and shallow and deep socket.
    28inch breaker bar
    16 inch breaker bar
    1/4 ratchet
3/8 ratchet + another one that has a swivel head
    1/2 ratchet
8mm-24mm open end and box end spanners (two sets, one ratchet one non ratcheting)
    ballpein hammer
24inch piece of heavy wall 3/4inch rigid conduit (can be used to beat on shit, slipped on a wrench as a cheater or ratchet strap and conduit for a broken leaf pack)
allen set (forget the sizes, in 3/8 drive)
    needle nose pliers
    1/4inch flat head screw driver
klein tools multi bit 10 in 1 heavy duty screw driver
1/4 drive screw driver adaptor (for all 1/4 sockets)
    monkey wrench
    little prybar
    medium size prybar
needle nose vice grips (great for broken brake lines)
    2 normal vice grips
2 pairs of 440 channel locks (I also use these to hold pots where the handles broke off)
    linesmen pliers
    diagonal side cutting pliers
    fluke multi meter
    extendable magnet
    little extendable mirror thing
    wire strippers/wire crimp
milwaukee ratcheting 10 piece screw driver (this was actually for work but ended up in the truck)
    knipex 3/8 capacity bolt cutter
varies sizes of torx bits as well for 3/8 drive
9/16 socket since the access door for the oil filter is 3/8 bolts
fluke non contact voltage tester (I have like 8 of these, ones always in the truck)

Might be missing a few other things.
Some of this is also because if I do a stop on the way home from work if someone called me to check something out. I don't bring my tools home from work and sometimes I get service calls from friends so most of this stuff will allow me to do basic electrical work.

non mechancial things I also have
    Silky gomboy folding saw
agawa canyon boreal 21 folding saw
    first aid kit
    viair compressor
    ARB tire repair kit
    ARB EZ deflator
    Marine flares
    probably like 200ft of paracord
    first aid kit
    fire extinguisher
    wool blanket
    bug spray
    wet ones

probably some other stuff too that I can't think of right now.
Like I said mine is basically set up for in a moments notice I can hit the trails.
This is mostly set this way since sometimes I get home from work and I'll shower quick then grab my pack and plano totes and the box I built as my kitchen then take off camping or something.
This way all I need to do is grab my pack and those 2 boxes and I can go camping anywhere as I have rations, all cooking tools, tent, clothes etc all ready to go. No need to worry about tools I might need as they are always there.
Could always stop and grab food on the way up north

This is mainly because I get home from work early enough if I leave within an hour of getting home I can beat all the cottage traffic

All of the stuff above is either under the back seat or behind it.

It's a start, I'll definitely need a breaker bar and a pry bar as well as some deep sockets

I just picked up the 159 piece mechanics set from Costco.

Seems pretty sweet. It was $75 after taxes.

most of the stuff is visible.
a few things like the meter and voltage tester are in the glovebox
all bungee cords etc are in the bed cubby storage and I have an ARB deluxe recovery kit in the bed as well.

One pic is one of my plano totes which has MSR elixir 3 tent, double sleeping pad, montain hardware sleeping bag, some paracord, silnylon tarp
I'd keep my hultafors axe with me but could cause some concern getting pulled over so ya, kept with my pack.
behind the small seat is the wool blanket, rain jacket, first aid kit, shemagh (sp?)
other seat is the compressor fire extinguisher, tire repair kit, flares, tire deflator is in the compressor bag, and ya jack is still there with safejack attachments and noco booster pack.
Its not every size socket from 8-29, but every size that would be used on the truck is there.
bug spray and wet ones are in passenger door in the front.

    Just took the pics
I've got a few ammo containers as well with some spare parts and hose clamps, I'd grab it at the same time as grabbing all the camping gear. Either way last time I timed it, took me about 20min to fully load up includng two 20L containers of water. Then can go anywhere I want for the weekend.

Haha dude there's still stuff I'm missing.

Still need to get a tire iron set in case I ever pop a bead right off.
And I was suggested by a friend a spud and centre punch of varies sizes can really come in handy.

So far I'm yet to need to fix much on mine besides a tire. But I know two of my buddy's love my tool set haha
