Anyone hear that the 2018 Tacoma 4cyl will be a 200hp variant? There are a few mentions of this online, is there any merit to this or just a rumor???

99.9% this is just a rumor, they are going to keep the same motor they have been using since 2005, why change it if its not broke! The 4 cylinder engine is bulletproof!

I'd wait till you hear it from Toyota to consider it accurate.

Yes, 'leaks' occur to build hype. But they also 'protect' in case it doesn't happen.

I never even test drove a 4cylinder. Do they feel gutless?

I had an accord that was loaded down with snowboarding shit and beer on the way to 7 springs, pa and I barely made it up hills.

How's a 4 banger truck handle driving with a load in the mountains.

Ok, here's how this initially started. About 5 or 6 weeks ago I was at my dealer in Syracuse. I was asking him if a factory tow package was available on the 4cyl..he said no but I think they're coming out with a 200 hp 4cyl in fall but he wasn't sure if that would have a factory tow package but he'd ask his rep...so I googled and only saw the post I linked and another referencing the 200hp version..initially this came from my sales guy who's been there over 25 years...I was just asking if anyone else heard this..that's all.

It may not be broke, but I'm not sure what its current place is. It makes around half the power of the v6, but gets the same or worse mileage. lol

I drove the I4 for nearly 10 years, but I had the work stripper 2-seater Base model (no power options) MT. It was a very light truck.

It never felt guttless. In fact, it felt a lot stronger than my current 3.5V6 (TRD OR MT) especially up hill. My 3.5V6 feels like it struggles to do anything until 3.5kRPM. There was an immediacy to the I4 that the V6 doesn't have.

I think the SR5 reg. Cab paired with a I4 would be a great DD.

V6 is considerably more money. I4 = More money for mods!

You're definitely not going to win any drag races, but it gets the job done.

I've towed a 6x10 trailer with two MX bikes, fuel, tools, camping gear, firewood, cooler, and had a passenger through the PA mountains on the way to a race track a couple times now. Most hills you're in 4th and some of the particularly steep hills you will shift into 3rd with that load. But I never had a problem keeping pace with traffic.

Yes and no. Don't forget that in the automatic variant the 4 bangers have a 4.3 axle ratio. So around town it probably has about the same feel as the new 3.5 V6 to be perfectly honest.

Up in the mountains over 6-7,000 feet it does get anemic from the altitude. What I found the most annoying out of anything was the fact that the 6AT ratios seem to have a big hole between 3 and 4. It never wouldn't climb, you just had to kick it into 3rd and scream up the grades at like 5,000 RPM lol.

Pretty much this. Salesmen just sort of talk out their asses about rumors and speculation and won't hesitate to tell you something dubiously sourced. That said if 2018's do come to market with 200 HP and it's not based on the tune (unlikely), you can bet your ass I will work on figuring out a way to retrofit it.

Price point and reliability. I bought my 4 banger truck new off the lot for 22k.
