Coney Flats Road / Coney Lakes (IPW)

Anybody ever driven up Coney Flats Road to the Coney Lake trailhead in Indian Peaks? Is it doable in a stock Taco? I was gonna head up there soon to do some fishing and it'll cut 7 miles off the round trip if I can get up that road. Worth it to me! I saw a forest service site label it 4WD EXTREME so not sure how bad it is. My truck is stock, but I've taken it up some pretty rough routes/passes and haven't had any issues.

 

Dozens of times.

Last time I did it was in my stock Tacoma with 180,000 miles on the suspension. There are about 4 or 5 spots that will challenge how well you can pick/take a line.

And I'm not trying to be a jackass, but I have no idea what that means to a 3rd gen.

I haven't been on the trail in a year so I don't know if the conditions have changed but if you want it to be less intense, take the Middle St Vrain trail in, turn left onto Coney Flats Road and stop at the trailhead.

 

Did MSV in a bone stock 2015 SR5. I got high centered on the filter feature and needed a pull. Ended up doing all of it with my buddy who spotted me. Gibraltar lakes are amazing

I've driven up to the top of Castle Creek road in Aspen and everything I read said it was not advisable in a stock truck. Wasn't too bad. This truck is more capable than people realize!

 

Well, to be "that guy"- Off-roading is much more affected by the driver than the vehicle.

 

I remember the link road from MSV over to Coney was much rougher than starting Coney from Beaver Res, is this not true? Isn't there a pretty good rock garden before the lakes on the MSV side? Im interested in doing this also to cut off hiking mileage up to the pass.

 

There's a guardian obstacle at the end of Camp Dick as you enter MSV. To keep the Nissan Muranos off the trail. From there it's smooth sailing, with only one spot where tactical line taking is needed, until the turn onto Coney Flats Rd. From that junction to the creek crossing there are two pretty good rock gardens (so to speak) where slow and low is definitely the way to take it.

From the creek crossing down to Beaver Res there were three pretty gnarly spots for a stock 1st gen.

 

There is a rock garden on MSV to Coney Flats. It's not huge rocks, but careful spotting may be required for stock vehicles. There's also a climb before that which can typically get rutted and be a challenge especially if wet. I had to winch up once.
