I started out shifting that way when I bought this car and got 13mpg city and 17 hwy. I had to start shifting at 2.5k just to get decent mileage.

I had a 2010 SR5 4x4 V6 MT. Great truck and it had way more issues and TSB work than my current gen 3 2016 TRDOR 4x4 V6 AT. After nearly two years of my 3rd gen I'd say it runs circles around my gen 2 in every category. My gen 2 never got better than 18mpg. My gen 3 averages 24 mpg btwn city and highway. If had it to do over I would still go with the gen 3.

I came out of a 2016 Colorado with V6 and AT. The shift logic was worse than the third gen. Manufactures are looking for any way to raise gas mileage, and up shifting early is a popular thing to do these days. I'll admit, the Tacoma gas pedal feels "lazy", but the truck does not lack power. It will move if you step on it. If I need to get to speed quickly, I use the power (don't have to floor it), then quickly let off and cruise. I'm averaging 19 mpg in mixed (aggravating California) driving. This truck is at least a bit better in every way, compared to to my second gen......except having a payment again.
