I just purchased an 03 Taco x2 cab 2.7 l engine. It's completely stock. I have a set of bfg 285x75x16 from my previous truck. So I'm wondering if these may be a little to big/heavy for the engine.
Any advice for or against this?

If they aren't too big, what kind of lift/gear switch or other mods would I have to look into doing to get them on there.

    Thanks for your time.

Some searching of the 1st gen forum and you'll find some lovely tidbits of applicable wisdom.

    Auto or manual?

You'll probably want to regear if you put them on. You'll also need about a 2.5"-3" lift with a little plastic trimming. Aaaand a wheel with 4.5" backspacing or less.

2.7 with an auto is gonna be rough with heavy 285's. If that's the size you want, a re-gear is going to be reeeally beneficial. You probably have 4.10's or 4.56's stock, and you're gonna want at least 4.88's depending on how you use the rig.

Agreed. If OP can find out what his gearing is, he can use this to find out what he should go with:

All really good advice. Thanks for the links.
I don't necessary want to go that big it's just that I just purchased those tires about a year ago, and they have so much life left. so it would be nice not to have to buy another set. I wouldn't mind going a bit smaller, maybe 265s. Maybe I can trade down a size... will look into it.

265/75/16s will fit with everything stock. You could try to sell those 285s on craigslist. If you wanna do a straight trade, there's probably a billion members on here that would go for it.

I have run 285/75/16 for a number of years on my 2002 double cab prerunner. Stock 4:56 gears.
    No issues ever with power.

Check your axle code on the door seal. You're looking for B04A I believe for 4:56.
Anything higher than that would require a regear.

One of my buddies has an '01 2.7 auto 4x4 with 265's and it's no fun anywhere near highways and hills. I guess power is in the eye of the beholder...

Matic is that a 4 cyl 2.7 auto?

What kind of lift do you have on it to fit those tires?

I'm running Cooper ST Maxx 265/75/r16's on my 3.4L manual with 4.10's. It eats gasoline for breakfast and doesn't want to get up over 70mph unless there's a good tailwind. Of course my massive camper shell isn't winning me any races either.

I was thinking of regearing to 4.30 or 4.56 but I might just dial back the tires at some point and try to find some lighter rims. I'm also lifted 2.5" which helped a little with the clearance up front. Based on what I see on my rig when stuffed in the rear, you'd need to get cutting tools out to fit a 285, but I haven't tried so I could be wrong on that.

I run 40" tires with a 2.7 engine. So anything can be done :D

In regards to regearing, I wouldn't spend the money going from 4.56 to 4.88. The gears are too close and you wouldn't feel that much of a difference between the two.

Now, 4.10 to 4.88,,,,that's something worth doing.

    OP,
I have an auto trans with the 2.7 motor... running the 285-75-16's and am geared to 5.29's.
If there are any hills/ mountains in your area, this is what you'll need. If the area is flat, perhaps 4.88's.
My truck is a DD and 0-60 times are nothing to be proud of.

    Good luck.

Sorry to dig the thread up, but I'm looking at new tires/rims and wondering if 265/75/16 BFG A/T KO2s would be a good size for a 97 single cab 4x4. Does that size fit all stock 4x4s or are the 01-04 models different?

That size will fit all Tacomas. You might rub on the mud flaps though. Be sure to keep the wheel specs near stock otherwise it changes things.
