I have a 2016 Taco TRD Sport 4x4 and wanted to get it lifted. I reached out to a local shop for advice on what size lift and wheels/tires I could do without having rubbing issues. The salesman I spoke to gave me a quote for a Rough Country 4" lift kit with Fuel Vapor 20x10 wheels and 35x12.50 tires. After doing a little research it looks like that would never work. On Rough Country's website they state that even their 6" lift kit will only accommodate 33s. I actually prefer the look that a 17-18" wheel with 33s has with a 6" lift. Looks beefier with more sidewall.

 

So the ultimate question is, since most 6" lift kits that I have looked into are the same price as their 4" kit counterpart, of the same brand, is it better to go with 6" to gain wheel and tire clearance as well as ground clearance, or will that cause issues with angle geometry?

Lol, my wife and kid still have to be able to get in and out of it, preferably without a step ladder. The past couple of years I have made family vacations out to Tennessee and there are some off road trails out where I go that I would love to go down, some of which cross water, and I want to make sure that I don't flood my cab or snag anything on the bottom.

 

You can fit that same size wheel and tire combo with a 2.5 inch lift and a CMC. The smaller lifts are a lot easier on your truck components and actually better for wheeling. Your truck though.... Either option will look good.

 

Appreciate the feedback. Appearance is always in the back of my mind, but I don't want to make mods that look cool if they are just going to tear things up at the same time due to severe angles or bad tolerances. Having an awesome looking driveway ornament is not my idea of a good investment.

 

I hear that... If your stuck on the 4+ inch lift your going to have to talk to someone who know more than me about those kits. I will say if you have it done somewhere that really knows tacos they will probably do it right, its just going to cost an arm and a leg. With that being said I think your going to be hard pressed to find some better looking truck than some of the ones here running Fox, Icons, or Kings, with 285's. Just my opinion though.

 

Here's a great thread to read up on. Drop bracket lifts are fine, but it ultimately comes down to getting better shocks than the ones that come with it. They also usually come with blocks to lift the rear, which are shit. You'll want a leafpack. If you go 4" lift in the front, you can do dakars in the rear for ~3" of lift and you'll be looking good.

Thanks, that was super helpful. I was also looking at the BDS 6" Coil Over which uses Fox replacement shocks. Three times the price, but seems like a high quality kit.

 

If you want to go 4"+ lift, you're going to be spending thousands. First the lift itself, with quality components will not be cheap. Then there's wheels and tires which is at least $1500. Then there's lift installation. To install the drop bracket, you need to have part of your frame cut out and the new thing welded in place. Not easily reversible by any means, so take that int account with resale value. This is why a lot of people recommend 3" lift with 33s. It can all be undone, except a cab mount chop ( which doesn't need to be undone).

 

You will be trimming the body mount for any tire above 33" if you are looking to wheel it. You can certainly cheat it (maybe) with a creative alignment for street driving.

This is my truck with a 6" BDS lift and 295/70r18's they measure pretty true to 34".

 

I'd say 95% of folks with lifted 3rd gens on here are no higher than 3" lift, and really there is not much reason to go any higher than that. You can easily fit 285/70/17 tires which are 33's and still have trouble getting in and out of the cab. Now, if you're going for the FERD FTeeeeeeen Tousand-5 light bars-hids in your reflector housing-12" lift-2 inches of tire sidewall look, go for it!

Seriously though, it's your truck. If you're not going to be happy unless you're getting 6" of lift, that's all you man. Just about everyone on here though will tell you to not go over 3" unless you want more headaches down the road.

 

I am a total noob when it comes to truck lifts. I have been patrolling these boards for months getting info and just recently started posting here, so all this info is very helpful. Plus, I prefer talking with people that have actually done lifts as opposed to relying solely on product websites or installers. They don't have to live with the lift, they just need to sell it. I believe factory clearance is something like 11 1/2-12" from the ground, so a 3" lift with 33s is probably a more reasonable option after reading a few other threads.

 

Just wanted to say that your setup does look amazing, but after seeing 6" on a Taco with some reference in the picture, my wife would probably hate me.

 

You'll actually gain more ground clearance going that route as opposed to doing a drop bracket.

 

I would not do a 4" lift with a drop bracket for 33" tires. I would find a quality 2.5" - 3" lift for that size tire. I think you will be happier with that in the end.

I obviously have no issues with drop brackets, but there is no sense in running them to fit a 33" tire.

 

Lifting stock control arms, cv's, balljoints, etc... at all has the probability of causing just as many headaches as a drop bracket kit. If you don't want any headaches i'd leave the truck stock
