Help me understand this trend

Also atrac isn't only on automatics. I have 3 pedals and atrac.

 

As another already replied, but I will double his feedback and tell you A-TRAC is on all manual 2009-2017 Off Road 4WD Tacos. The automatics beginning with the Third Gen (2016) have Multi-Terrain-Select (MTS) which is adjustable A-TRAC. CRAWL (also a 3rd Gen feature) is cruise control in Low Range, as best as I can say... It will crawl you out of being buried in sand. I can light pedal my A-TRAC and do almost as good as the video of Crawl working.
The Hydraulic Brake Booster is what makes A-TRAC work and match rotation on tires, even if one is in the air (as a locker does). My 2010 brakes are great. My 2005 were not. My 2001 were.
I have owned three Off Road 4x4 Tacomas. The rear locker, while sometimes takes a moment to engage, would always come on. Since A-TRAC, I rarely have used the locker... only when pulling stuck 2WD Tacos. The A-TRAC is so much more traction, as it works ALL the tires, not just the rear two... and you can steer easily. Not so when locked. Embrace change... when it works!

 

Well, I got me a sport because $29,500 with 11,400 miles 2015 was a steal around these parts. Plus my hood scoop makes me feel like Dominic Toretto, and people fear Toretto.....

For us I canada the trd off road is not available in a double cab, you have way more configurations available. I got the sport for the double cab mainly, can change suspension later and I do like the color matched bumpers and am indifferent to the hood scoop.

 

Since the 2017 model year came out you can buy a TRD Offroad Double cab short box in Canada.

 

I had a similar outlook. I wanted double cab, 4wd, tow package and long bed. Other than those "must haves" I was pretty neutral. I thought I wanted Quicksand color, but that wasn't a deal breaker. I could have had one but they would have had to ship it and the cost was $400 to do that. And I really liked the inferno more and more, the more I looked at it, and in the sun it really had a lot of gold flake in it and wow, I was sold.

 

Lifting a 2WD Sport is stupid.

Jesus. Another thread asking this question? If I only answered this question for the people with OR models that have seen as much or more dirt than my Sport, I bet I would talk to less than 5 % of posters. If you bought that OR 4x4, it's capable. Are you? Get out there and show me all the places your machine can go that mine can't.

If you could get the tech options on an SR5 this statement would at least hold a few drops of water.

Now the lift, for the most part yes of course it's for looks. I'll agree with you on that. For the first time in recorded history people want to drive vehicles they think look cool. It's crazy. It might even become a trend.

As an old geezer, I'm interested in all of the new tech stuff from the standpoint of making one safer. I sort of wish you could get collision avoidance and adaptive cruise control on these. I'm sure it'll be available in the not-too-distant future. Yeah, I like the parking assist, the blind-spot monitor, the backup camera, and wanted as much of that stuff as I could get.

 

I think you are missinformed. Lifting a truck doesn't make it anymore capable offroad, 99 times out if a 100 its done for show. (or under the guise of bigger tires, which is also inaccurate). Lifting it usually makes it worse offroad in most situations as now it had a higher center of gravity. crawl control is crap, locking diff is the only advantage. But then that's not much compared to ARB or equivalent.

 

Well that's just questionable decision making at best.

My lift is mostly for looks, and I still used quality parts, upgraded hardware, etc. I definitely do not understand buying a $40k truck and knowingly going cheap on your ride quality and safety.

 

i had hopes for this thread.

about the Sport, nobody ever mentions the color matched mirrors? i think this enhances skewp appeal by at least 10%.

as mentioned, i like the idea of adding an ARB.
