Separate checks pretty much every time. I dont want to or have the money to pay for other peoples food and I would'nt want someone else to pay for mine.

If I'm out with a girl, its hard to let her pay anything. I'll cover a girls expenses for the evening if she is legitly hanging out with me. Different story if she says meet me here and thats it.

When I'm out with guys we just get seperate checks.

seperate checks are the easiest because sometimes when splitting checks people dont realize exactly how much they should pay. I cant tell you how many times i have been out and someone orders a 10 meal and says mine was only 10 so heres 11. when in reality with tax and tip it should be somewhere in the 13 range. Once this happens 3 or 4 times on the same check you end up being 10, 20 dollars short and since i have been in the restraunt buisness my whole life i usually come up with the extra.

I like your attitude! I had a leach that once took me out to dinner because he had a "half off coupon." - He expected me to pay for the full priced meal! - this is a fucker that drove a Ferrari amongst other things. My last time I spoke with him he screwed a lady out of her home 'bailing her out from a foreclosure' (years ago). I told him he was f'd up and never spoke to him again. He got hit on his Duck the next week. He was cheap and a real dick. I think being cheap on a bill is a good indicator of whether he would help you if you needed help. If you are a guy that would defend being cheap, you wouldn't understand! ;)

How is it nickle and diming to pay for what you bought?? Expecting a friend or acquaintance to cover some part of your meal is lame. :jerkoff:

^Useless statement- That's like trying to declare you win before the game even starts.

You "friend" was a cheap asshole. I'll pay for what I order and cover my end of tax and tip. And if I invite someone or regularly go out with someone- I cover a meal and/or back and forth.

But you'd rather pay for someone elses food and hope they do the same next time as a rule?? Over getting a separate check??

And what I'm still confused about- How is it nickle and diming??

    1. Never ask for separate checks!! Your eating together right? Then Pay together!!
nothing is worse for a server, Unless the place has a POS system that makes it very easy.

    2. Unless someone is ordering an expensive item ($100 bottles of wine, $80 steak)
There should be no issue. If that IS the case that person should speak up at the end OR have the intention to pay the total bill from the start.

    3. Add 20%, Split the bill by how many in party and FORK UP!!

Being in the biz for 14+ years I think People who are worried about paying the extra couple of $ should just stay home and Save your pennies!!

what complicates things for me is sharing a bottle of wine (or two). at that point, split evenly or snatch the ticket to cover it all. if i am drinking wine with you, i feel comfy enough to grab the entire thing. BUT i have had some big tickets where i couldnt pay the whole thing..hate when an evening gets away from me.

This arguement reminds me of the healthcare debate...Do we split it evenly and make everyone pay for services they didn't take. lol. I dont want to start a debate but I thought its kinda humorous.

Most restaurants nowadays have a POS system capable of splitting up the ticket. I eat out with friends a lot and we always split the checks. Most of the time the servers end up making more in tips with split checks. when I tip I always add 20% then round up to the next dollar. And I usually dont tip less than $3 even if my tab is only $6-7.

I dont mind paying for people. As long as its appreciated. Good people take care of each other. Life it too short to be a cheap skate. Do you really want to be "that guy".

It cuts both ways. IFyour a cheap Fu*k and you never pay, people WILL NOT take care of you or help you out when you actually NEED it.

There are a few exceptions when I wont pick up the check. My wifes freinds husband is a freakin leach. I forgot how many times I paid 100% and he NEVER offered in return. I just dont go out with them anymore...

    Yep, not good.

Lots of pissed of OP resonses here, you should have an idea of what your getting yourself into before you decide on the place and the people your with.

We actually like a place that has seperate checks just for that reason if we go out with certain friends. Others its ok, you know that in the end everyone will pony up TOO much and the waitstaff enjoys our business.

Experiences and personal preferences of choice for who/what and where we go basically. We've learned the hard way..much like the OP here.

I always go separate checks, then everyone pretty much splits the tip.
