    Yeah...

I highly recommend you visis www.google.com and do some research.

Tons of different lockers available, different price ranges, for different purposes. Depends on what you want it for......pros & cons for all varieties of lockers.

if your a xcore trail runner then go with a locker, if you do 80-90% of driving ON road then go with a LSD or "posi" rear end.

There are lockers that are always activated. They work miracles off road but can be a little feisty on road, especially in wet or icy conditions. These range from a couple hundred bucks for a lunchbox locker on up to nearly a thousand.

A selectable locker is probably what you want, ARB is one example. It drives as a normal open diff creating the on road manners you've come to expect. When you hit the nasty stuff, you push a button and the rear axle locks moving both tires as one giving you massively improved traction. These are $800 for parts and a few hundred more for labor.

If you can find a TRD Off Road donor truck of your generation. You can pull the selectable locker rear axle off of it an bolt it straight on to yours. I'm sure if your patient you could find an axle for less than $1000 no problem. I don't really know the price range though.

A posi or limited slip is another option. They split the difference between an open axle and a locker. They behave well on the road and "limit" slip off road. They are in the price range of the less expensive lockers.

"Lunchbox" lockers like Lock Rite or Powertrax can be found in the 2 to 3 hundred dollar range. If you're handy, you can realistically install one of these yourself, too.

yeah im looking at the powertrax locker that is for my truck prerunner 03. 310$ Do i need anything else or is it install and bam its all good. Is this the cheapest route and will give me extra traction and power for off roading? Is the wiring needed to engauge and disenguage these lockers or how does it work?

I'm a little new to this too. What is the difference between a lunchbox locker and the more expensive models? What is the difference between, stock and posi. and posi and locker? what is posi short for? Is it like a system that detects when the wheel with power is not the wheel with traction and sends power to the opposite wheel accordingly or something?

Aside from new diff fluid, install and bam it's all good. A "Lincoln locker" is cheaper, free in fact, but you don't want that. That is for off road only. There are no wires or anything. It is an automatic locker that is always engaged. Imagine with traction, that when the drive shaft turns, the tires turn respectively to the speed of the shaft. A powertrax will allow one wheel to turn faster (the outside wheel on a curve) than the drive shaft is pushing. However, it won't allow a wheel to turn slower than than the drive shaft is pushing (one tire spinning in mud and the one sitting there picking its nose).

Lunchbox only replaces certain parts that the decent shadetree mechanic can handle. More advanced lockers require more parts to be replaced. These parts need very specific tolerances and whatnot that the average joe probably shouldn't be messing with.

Posi-traction is a proprietary name (I think). It is actually a limited slip system. It's like generically calling soda "Coke", or inline skates "Rollerblades".

Search the Internet. There are cool videos and everything out there to help explain some of this.

limited slip is essentially what comes stock though correct? It allows one wheel to spin faster than the other for turns and such?

why would anyone get the more expensive locker if they can just get the lunchbox one??? I guess that is what I was asking in my original question, although why one is more expensive than the other would have been my next question anyway.

so powertrax is a good brand locker and will get me what im looking for? It will give me the TRUE 2wd power? Now for the negitives, will i loose any power, loose MPG's? or what not. Im really wanting a locker to get me through some of the stuff i get stuck on. im sick of getting one tire off the ground and that happens to be the one thats spinning.. (sigh).. So Powertrax locker is the way for me? cheapest but good quality, easy to install?

Do you have 5 lug nuts per tire or 6? There is some variation within Toyota axles.

More expensive type is typically stronger. Unless you're beating the hell out of it, you won't break either one. More expensive ones can also be selectable meaning you can turn them on and off with the flip of a switch.
