I was running amsoil in my 07 when the motor went out. The truck had 48k miles on it at the time of the failure. The amsoil that was in it had 12k miles on it. Prior to putting amsoil in I had just been letting the Toyota dealer service it every 5k. The amsoil I was running was 25k oil, however I was going to change it the day after my engine went out, I already had new oil purchased. I was driving down the road and had just pulled back into my lane after passing someone. When I noticed the oil light come on. I quickly pulled to the side of the road and shut my truck off. I checked the oil and it showed full on the dipstick. When I tried to restart it it would barely crank. I had it towed into the dealer and when they drained the oil it was full of metal. They told me the cause of this was the amsoil filter starving my engine for oil. Amsoil had a bulletin on their website that the filter I was using (E057) was not for Toyotas. So Toyota did not warranty the engine. Amsoil also did nothing for me and acted as if they did not care. I would like to hear your opinions on this.

heres a question...im due for my oil change at 5k now and will be switching to mobil 1 synth. In the manual is suggests using 5w20 or 0w20(fuel efficient and better for cold weather starts, but im in San Diego) so i was going to go with the 5w20 and remember noticing that majority of people use 5w30. Is there a reason for that? Pros and Cons using 5w20 to 5w30? I never put synth. in any of my cars until now and saw the price for synthetic...sh*t that stuff is expensive.

Are you sure. I think the manual suggests 5w30. I just switched to mobil 1 5w30 and it seems to instantly get better mpg and less warm up time.

My opinion is that it sucks. It's over priced and they don't back it up. I don't know too much about it but from what I have read I think it's kind of a pyramid with a lot of people getting a cut as "distributors" ? The filter thing is scary. Amsoil people can flame me but that's my opinion.

You must have the 4 banger. Yeah the 5w30 is called for in the V6 engines, and most peeps have that engine, so you'll see more people using it. Use the 0W20 or 5W20 as the manual suggests and change it every 5K. I don't know why people think if they buy top notch oil, they can change it every 25K.... lets put it in perspective, if you change your oil at 5K or 7500 every time. An average driver will change his/her oil TWICE a year and the oil changes in this vehicle are rediculously easy, way easier than replacing the engine. Change you oil people.... run synthetic or dino... doesn't matter, just change your oil..... why would you leave the same oil in your vehicle for 2 years?.

I think the longest oil change interval from Amsoil is 35,000 miles (or 1 year), and that's with one specific kind of oil, under only normal driving conditions, and I think you have to run a bypass filter system too.

Man, that bites. Amsoil is always saying they will take care of you if you have problems, I guess that's a bunch of hooey. I can see why Toyota wouldn't help you, running a diff filter and all.

So Amsoil sells you this filter that's supposed to be the right one, then when you're using it and have trouble, it becomes the wrong one? That's called CYA.

How long ago did this happen? What did your attorney say about it?

Personally, I think it's a big mistake to run any oil filter more than 500 miles, no matter how good the oil itself is.

That being said, this is what I'd do. Write to the headquarters of Amsoil, and tell them this story in brief but pointed detail, and about how you were harmed by their advice. Then tell them that over the next year you are going to post it on EVERY automotive, motorcycle, and social forum on the internet.

Then add a list of every forum address you can find. There are literally hundreds of them, and it will take an afternoon of cut and pasting, but when you're done it will make an impressive list. That you've even taken the time to do that will show them you're serious about this and aren't about to let it die.

I got a good deal on RP. Basically the same price as Mobil 1.

I have always changed my dino-oil and filter at 3000 miles. My plan now is to use a Wix filter and change it and the RP at 5000.

    Sound like a decent plan?

    TIA

That is an interesting point. Do you have a link to some info on API ratings. I would like to read more on the topic.

I wonder if the previous owner had been using dino/mineral oil and it had some build up in it that the synthetic was actually cleaning off? Then all of that debris clogged up the filter. I have heard that when switching from dino/mineral oil it can cause you start having leaks. But that is usually on 100k mile+ engines.

    No matter, still sux.

It don't take an Engineering degree to know that as a filter clogs up the out flow from the filter will be reduced or the fluid will engage a bypass - be bypassed and be non filtered.
25,000 miles without a filter change ------ this is why I do not subscribe to Amsoil claims on anything be it their filters or oil .
