GOPRO

Any one using the factory gopro mount?

 

I'm using it with a Hero 5 Session and it has worked pretty well. The only problem is the battery doesn't last very long on those things..

 

I'm using my Hero 3 as a dash cam with it. PITA to always turn it on and off and hide it when I leave the truck but it is an extra so why not? It stays plugged it, 5 minute looped video, works fairly decent for what I need it to do.

 

Yes, but not for its intended purpose. I have my own agenda.

 

How'd you attach that to the go pro Mount?

 

How about some of you fellas shed some light on these gopro cameras for us who don't know a thing about them ?

I have the mount in my truck and been trying to figure out how to get it off , glad I left it alone now as I think I want one of them gopro's ! LOL

Couldn't for the life of me understand what in the world it could be good for . Than we made a roadtrip threw the badlands . Now I see says the blind man ! One of them cameras would have been great on all the scenic drives !

My wife tried to record with a phone some of the tunnels and It kinda worked but man o man one of them cameras would be a great feature ! I just now figured that out . Next year road trip we WILL have one . I have no idea which one to consider and would very much appreciate any recommendations from you folks who have used them .

I used the gopro helmet mount and velcro. I folded the mount and tightened it with its screws and its just a bridge to hang devices from at that point.

I cut a small Velcro piece to go across the bottom to lock the piece that goes around it, but first I snugged it tight and slipped it over the mount so it'd be tight and the bottom short piece locks it in. I also rolled a small leftover piece on top to level it. It now has a high clear view and is much faster in detecting radar signals.

Are you powering it from from the mirror or somewhere else?

 

As an adrenaline freak, I've been an adopter of the GoPros for the last 5 years when the Hero 2s came out. I use mine primarily for kayaking videos in fast moving, steep whitewater but also occasionally for a scenic, fast MTB trail. And I love piecing together the adventures and editing into Vimeo to share. But what really makes the difference for me is being able to show the experience as a whole, which includes the drives (sometimes offroad) in these beautiful locales to reach your destinations. My biggest tips for the GoPros...

Find a good used Hero 3+ Black edition if you can. No screen on the rear, but can connect via Bluetooth for live video if you choose - the screens munch up battery life big time!
Unless you're trying to capture fast action sports with it, leave it around 30 frames per second @ 1080p - even 720p is decent in many situations and the fewer FPS and resolution. rule of thumb is that you quickly increase your battery consumption and memory card the higher the res and frame rate.
Editing - when I got a GoPro it became much like a Taco on a smaller scale. I then decided I didn't like Windows for video editing... bought a MacBook Pro.... used iMovie for awhile and outgrew it, paid $300 for Final Cut Pro which a lot of pros use.
Record the good stuff - unless you're just using it for security purposes, record what's important to you... don't just leave it running, else trying to edit and show something fun to watch takes forever to sift through boring footage.

I'm a huge fan of the GoPros all around, but I did buy a 5 Session and ended up returning it and sticking with my Hero 3+ Black from 3-4 years ago. Great video quality, long battery life and bulletproof as they get. I've slammed my head against so many rocks underwater with this thing on and it just keeps on ticking ...my brain... perhaps not so much!

Use my windshield mount all the time with a Hero 5 Session - absolutely love it. Keep the camera charging in the cubby while I drive. I bought a $20 mount/accessory kit from Amazon (

then the next "mod" I had to have was good, smooth video I could take w/ my iPhone 7 Plus... in came the DJI mobile gimbal. combining the go pro footage with smooth-movement video off the iPhone and I can really pretend I know what the hell I'm doing

 

Anyone know where I can get a GoPro for under $100 new? I don't care which one, I just want to use it as a dashcam. I really like gopro, but their prices are ridiculous.

I use it for the hero 5. Run a USB c from it to the USB plug in under radio. This way I can keep it charged. It's voice activated. Like it a lot. Does well on the trails.

 

It's pretty awesome - in the first couple mins of the video I put up you can see some of the footage from mine. I actually had my helmet mount (which really is better clearance for a full view) at home so had to resort to the smallest mount I own. the result is that you see more of the cab than you would with an angled one that gets closer to the windshield but overall the viewpoint it pretty awesome imo.

 

Buy a used one on eBay... I'd at least try and get one w/ bluetooth connectivity if you can though. I see plenty of used 3+ blacks on there for ~$150.

 

Is the bluetooth to watch video from your phone?

 

When you need someone and no one else has it just engineer it yourself lmao. I did find a website today that has a go pro mount which attaches to their radar detectors and most likely will fit the windshield of our trucks since its just a regular go pro mount.

 

Yeah... you could easily (although transfer is slow) transfer the video and pictures to your phone and/or see what's being recorded realtime on your phone. It also gives you an easier way to start/stop the video esp. if you have your phone on a dash mount or something in easy reach. Difference from the 2nd gen to the 3rd gen go pros was significant. Beyond that, the size has gotten a little smaller, 4k video support (which consumes tons of data and battery) and a bit better low light if your inside or shooting early/late in the day... But, I'd strongly recommend getting a used GoPro vs. what I've seen a lot of people do and go to another brands' cheap $100 knock-off. there are other good brands that aren't go pros out there, but also a lot that want to claim they content with go pro quality in the $100 range. They don't

 

Damn a few days too late. Just sold my 3+ black with a LCD back screen and a ton of accessories for $120. I should have posted it on here
