Be careful European oils are rated different than American oils - with almost all oil manufactures

If your oil is loaded down with "dirt" (wear particles, contaminants, etc.) then yes, you need to change it.

In my experience, though, Mobil 1 at 8,000-10,000 miles is not significantly contaminated with any "dirt". After my warranty period is up, I plan to try 10,000 mile changes and see what the oil analysis says. If the oil is fine at 10,000 or 12,000 miles, then there is no logical reason to change it sooner than that.

That may be true, but I would still like to know if they have a time stipulation in conjunction with their high mileage oil change intervals.

I know my wife's BMW will say it needs service when one year is up regardless of mileage. But they have no set intervals...the computer monitors your driving habits then schedules your service interval accordingly. For her driving it is every ~13k.

That's what I figured. It's probably not a good idea to leave oil in an engine for more than a year.

I run Mobile-1 Synthetic oil cahnges every 5k and the oil is still really good every time. I can probably get away with 10k, idk why I don't at least wait 7.5k lol

Well I drive gravel roads all the time - ever see the dust plume they put up. Some of that is bound to get sucked into the engine.

whitebread, you are correct in your post #24. I have a mercedes 2010 glk and there is a time limit of one year between oil changes.

not to many, love it the way it is
If running 10k change intervals be sure and check the oil level every now and then. Some motors burn oil and the longer the oil is in the engine the more chance of it becoming low. I've been changing my 09 every 5k and 5.5 quarts go in and a little over 5 quarts come out including the oil in the filter so the truck is burning some oil, no visible leaks, etc..

also use a good quality oil filter, this is very important for long change intervals

Everything I've read indicates 3,000 on dino and 5,000 on syn. If you are going to thro your truck away every 3 years then who cares if you want to keep it why worry about saving a couple of dollars, you are protecting a $30,000 investment. I know you paid a lot less.[IMG]

I have 180,000 miles on my previous vehicle, and for about 130,000 miles of that I've been running 7500-10000 mile oil change intervals. The engine still runs perfectly, does not consume oil, and I expect it to last another 100,000 miles before it needs any major work.

I must be doing something right...

if it is loaded with dirt, you need a better oil and air filter.

My Dad was same way. But oil from 1950's, 60's, 70's, 80's is different from oil now. Full synthetic, real full synthetic, not oil that just has "full synthetic" written on the label, can be used on extended drain intervals: 10k, 15k even 25k. The the quality of the oil is very important to the extended drain but the FILTER is equally as important. $7.00 oil and a $4.00 filter is a bad combination.

Doesn't the maintenance required light come on at 3k or 4.5k? I have only done one change in mine and couldn't find it in the manual.
