Telsa can do 0-60 in the time it takes our transmission to complete a manual shift in S mode.

I wish that was a joke.

I don't get it mine is fast enough to get tickets in every state in America. Even South America and its hard to get one there... Im a couple months from 40 though and have two sons . I guess I don't need my sportbikes and aftermarket turbo'd cars anymore.. I am glad I don't have to dyno tune anything any more .

I've had my 3rd gen for about 3 months now, and I really can't believe how slow it is. I had a Access Cab V6 4wd automatic 1st gen, then I had an Access Cab V6 4wd standard shift 2nd gen, and now an Access Cab V6 4wd standard shift 3rd gen, and holy cow this new one is gutless compared to even my old automatic first gen. It does weigh 1000lbs more, but still, it's a turd. Coming out of a standard shift 4.0L, this 3.5L feels like a little weenie around town. And of course the throttle delay is awful. I do like the fuel mileage, considering my 4.0L got about 18 if I pushed it off a cliff, but man do I miss the torque. The new engine does sound great above 3000 RPM, but there goes your awesome 24mpg...

I hope these ECU tuners can sneak a little low end torque out of this new 3.5L. I'm all in for something like that when my warranty expires. I hate to talk about modifying my daily driver (those days are over), but I think Toyota could have done better with the throttle response and low end torque.

I don't have a taco yet, will be selling my 370z for one and I can't deny I'm a little worried about this. But here's my take on this, and it's just my own personal opinion.

I come from a long time sports car history and a V8 f150. This taco may very well be one of the slowest cars I will own. But there comes a point where a certain level of power is just more than you need. I love my 370z, but I'm sure I use about half the power it has 95% of the time and it's not even that fast compared to some other cars out there. You just can't without risking an accident, a ticket, traffic school, and your insurance going up. I would know lol, and it was never worth it for a few seconds of fun. The few tickets I've had weren't even blazing fast, sometimes it was 10mph over speed limit and the cop came out of nowhere on a bike (maybe I just had shitty luck).

I don't disagree a bit more torque would be nice (based on test drives) but it's a very capable truck For what it is and like everything in life you have to see what best suits your lifestyle and at least for me I'm ok with a slow truck. I just never understood the point of a fast truck. I just picture them rolling over lol.. and I hated the shitty mpg on the f150.. it was like a car payment.

Agreed. I came from a 12 second v8 sedan to this truck. I don't mind how slow it is. It's a damn truck people.

Even the 6.2 ford raptor a lot of people like is still slower than a v6 camry in the 1/4 mile. I feel like people who complain about how slow their truck is has never owned a really fast car before.

At least you weren't one of the many people that bought a Lexus is250 thinking it was fast. That is one of the slowest cars I have ever driven. My 91 celica would give it a run for its money

Electric motors are just capable of making lots of torque from the get go. Electric motors and gas engines just have different requirements and capabilities.

Was this post a troll post?

Most of the people in this thread would really benefit reading the OV tune thread. From what they are saying almost all the drivability issues sound to be caused by the way the throttle plate operates as it is drive by wire.

It seems like most of the performance whiners are driving v6's... man, you guys would've been choked had you bought an I4. Regearing might give you guys some of the pep you want, and possibly cheaper than taking the hit on switching trucks. Then you don't have to deal with parking a full size!

Yup, sorry for the stupid comments on the Tesla, let's get back to the subject of why the 3rd gen Tacoma are so gutless. Essentially Toyota failed on the power numbers for this truck which is also effected by the added weight of this model for its performance numbers. There is nothing that will add any significant power short of adding a supercharger that is not available through TRD to protect the warranty. If you need to pull a trailer any distance that has any weight or going through the mountains with a trailer you probably should buy another truck, but if your not pulling a big load you can probably make do just fine.

It's not Toyota doing it, it's government mandates.

Yeah except the Colorado hauls the mail, I have one at work and it will do a big fat burn out if I let it have it. It also gets better mileage than the 2017 taco I traded in for a 4runner. Toyota dropped the ball big time with this power train system. I’m sure gearing has a lot to do with it so it can be fixed but it won’t be cheap

    More power means less longevity.
I just drove from Dallas to San Antonio. It has enough power for the highway, it just hunts gears on hills.

I drove mine from Los Alamos to Austin to watch the motogp this year and got 15mpg and only went 5mph over the speed limit or followed the limit. Mine was a manual and 6th gear doesn’t work unless I was 85mph or going downhill. I couldn’t never get her to get good mileage with the Ducati in the back which weighs 400lbs if that. The 3.5l just didn’t like doing anything I wanted it to.
