Really depends on what type of camping you are wanting to do?

Is this going to be backpacking? Family Camping? At a park or backcountry? etc etc.

I have different gear that I use depending on the type of trip I am taking and I change it up all the time.

As in like a weekend getaway by a river. Probably no facilities.

Are you going to be camping next to your truck?

will your vehicle be by the river with you? (this is important due to the size of stuff a car can carry, vs what you carry yourself)

Pretty much the basics I take on any given truck camping trip. Most of this is also in my backpacking kit.
    • Tent/shelter with proper waterproofing (few tents come truly waterproofed)
    • Shade if needed (tarp, awning, etc.), also provides rain protection
    • Camp chairs
    • Sleeping bags appropriate for the temperatures
    • Pad for comfort/warmth under you
    • Proper clothing for temps and weather
    • Cooler for drinks/perishables
    • Dry foods
    • Enough water for excessive hydration, and then a ton more for putting out campfires and having it for emergencies
    • Cook stove and/or fireplace grill for cooking
    • Plates/cups/silverware/paper towels
    • Soap to wash dishes and yourself, scrubby pad, and at least a hand towel or two
    • A couple ways to start a fire (matches and lighter, 2 lighters, etc)
    • A shovel to dig a fire pit (if you have a fire) and to extinguish/bury your fire after putting water on it.
    • First aid kit and medications
    • Some sort of cordage (paracord, clothesline, etc) - at least 100'
    • Knife/axe/hatchet
    • Roll of duct tape
    • Trash bags!!!
    • Navigation aids if you're going remote
    • At least basic tools
    • Leave people your intended location and itinerary
    • Check ahead of time with local agencies about fire restrictions, road closures, permits, etc.
    • Don't forget the fun stuff! Hammocks, fishing poles, horseshoe sets, frisbees, etc.

The things I get excited about when truck camping are:
    - inflatable mattress and extra blankets in my relatively huge tent
    - near-unlimited beer kept cold by my cooler
    - cast iron pan cooking. I get fancy when I can use a cooler to carry perishable food. I like to prep all my cooking food, throw it in Tupperware, then later, just toss the contents into the hot pan over the fire.
    - shit ton of extra water
    - shit ton of extra beer
Other than those, I bring pretty much the same gear as when I'm backpacking (see post #6317).

Nearly all my cooking at home is on/in cast iron. It's the best stuff ever.

Also, depends on temperature? mountains? coast?
Sleep in truck, or a tent/hammock?

No doubt about it. The wifey has all of the Le Creuset big pieces, and we have 3 sizes of cast iron frying pans. It's the only way to cook.
