I'm definitely still a skeptic... however, thought I'd throw a little bit of kindling onto this fire.... :)

A service writer at my local Toy dealership just told me he "did receive an email that they were opening back up the service campaign for frame rust" on 1st gens. He didn't have any further details he could share with me on it.... ":-/ He also was def not the most familiar with the original campaign either (details below), so, all this with a grain of salt still... :) :p

Backstory: I had stopped by to setup to have my frame re-inspected before the 15 years is up on it...its a 2003 and had the rust prevention previously applied during the original service campaign (shows as 2011)... I've not ever used this Toy dealership before really as I'm new to living in this area so i don't know any of the guys there personally so I just went to one of the service writers there and chatted them a bit about it. He was only mildly familiar with all the details of the 1st Gen campaign, but knew nothing about the details of having the frame re-inspected or what the extended warranty actually covered after the rust prevention was sprayed. He is checking with his manager (who was at lunch when I stopped by) and they will get back to me. I am going to pry for further information on whether the 1st gen campaign will be opening back up.

Anybody got a buddy that works for Toyota? I know an awesome Toyota dealer mechanic back where I'm from and I'm going to hit him up for info and see what he knows...

Toyota is recalling certain model year 2001 through 2004 Tacoma light trucks manufactured from August 28, 2000, through August 27, 2004, and originally sold, or currently registered, in the following cold climate states with high road salt usage.

    http://www.autoblog.com/buy/2002-Toyota-Tacoma/recalls/

Toyota will notify owners, dealers will inspect the vehicle and replace the spare tire carrier lift plate as necessary, free of charge. The recall began in February 2013. Owners may contact their Toyota dealer or the Toyota Customer Experience Center at 1-800-331-4331.

    Pretty much stock right now

Yes, that's the spare tire plate recall.

Please note that this one is recall, unlike the frame corrosion issue, which is not a recall, but a voluntary action taken by Toyota. It is constantly incorrectly referred to as such here and in the general media. This spare tire carrier plate has a NHTSA case number and does not expire. The frame corrosion issue and resulting frame replacements under the extended warranty for certain cold weather states (with some exceptions) has clearly defined requirements and deadlines, but is not covered by any recall requirements. There are plenty of complaints filed with the NHTSA on the frame issue, but it has not risen to the point an official recall, and probably never will. Toyota is not likely to change any of the parameters of the program put in place back in the early 2010s, and I find no ongoing litigation on the 2001-2004 frame corrosion issue. Maybe there should be.

If Toyota were going to make any changes to this program we would have official notification by now. I've been at my dealer twice in as many weeks, and there is no indication of any change. I'll go out on a limb and say that this information pertains to the settlement of the class action last fall, which involves some 2nd gen Tacomas and other vehicles.

Well sorry to revive an old thread but I have a 04 double cab Tacoma. Bought in the USA in Utah in 04 and it was imported to Canada in 05 went through a few owners then to me.

I called around to canadian dealerships everyone turned me down except two. I went to the closest they summited my frame replacement and toyota Canada denied it for being a USA model.

I then called the closest USA dealership in Bellingham they told me to call foothills who does replacements. I booked an appointment and drove it down, it was inspection. Upon inspection they said it failed the inspection (has lots of holes!). And they would summit the claim. Truck was deemed unsafe to drive.

I received a call today with information they are replacing my frame. I just have to cover the shocks and a few items and labor to install those items. I'm trying to avoid getting new shocks as I'd rather put the money to a lift.

04 Tacomas still have till January 1st 2019 to get their trucks inspected!

    Good luck 20181101_123234.jpg 20181101_123309.jpg 20181101_123234.jpg 20181101_123309.jpg 20181101_123234.jpg 20181101_123309.jpg 20181101_123050.jpg

Those are only a few spots with holes. There were lots. They weren't able to put it on the hoist at all

I was told it is 15 years from the in-service date. This means date of sale I believe.
