I used to like my truck then I joined this forum and instantly died of ass cancer. Proof that this forum sucks the joy out of everything.

I can already forsee these same threads coming to the 4th gen section..........just like the ones in the 2nd gen comparing to 1st gens and these comparing 3rd to 2nd..........what a bunch of cyclic silliness.

I have owned 3 1st Gen Tacoma's...('98 AC and 2002/2003 Double Cabs). I have also owned
2 Tundras, a 2002 AC and 2005 Double Cab. I really liked all those trucks. I never warmed to the 2nd Gen Tacoma's. They were too big (compared to the 1st Gen) and at the same time too small (interior wise relative to their physical size) than the 1st Gen Tundra. I probably would have bought a 2nd Gen anyway, but I just couldn't stand the interiors. The interiors had way too much tacky plastic and just looked like something out of a bad sci-fi movie (I have the same complaint about 2nd Gen Tundras until 2014)...I especially disliked the gauge cluster.

Then I totalled my 2005 Tundra Double Cab a month ago. I looked for either another 1st Gen Tacoma or another 2005-2006 Tundra Double Cab 4x4. I just could not find either one that met my standards so I went and test drove new Tundras and Tacomas. The new Tundra had a fantastic motor, but was just too big. I was unimpressed with the Tacoma motor, but really like the new interior, so that combined with the fact that it was about $6K less than a comparable Tundra was enough. I've had the Tacoma almost 3 weeks now, and I like it...not love it...at least not yet. It's missing that "truck feel" like my 1st Gen Tacomas and 1st Gen Tundras had.

What I really wanted was a brand new 2004 Tacoma DC TRD 4x4 with improved seats (and frame longevity!) for less than $30K. I liked the simplicity (I could fix anything on that Truck pretty much), the truck-like feel and the fact that it was a compact truck that could seat four adults reasonably well. It was not a powerhouse but it had adequate power and that engine/tranny combo was bombproof. I really couldn't give 2 squats about all the "technology" updates on new trucks so I ended up with a 2017 Tacoma without the tech package.

I really feel like this is the mindset/paradigm of a real OG Toyota guy.

Aligns with what made Toyota trucks popular to begin with. Toyota has gotten away from that, most likely due to market reasons. They had to either play keep up technologically or set the standard.

Since you are channeling the the real OG Toyota guys - the SR with a 4cyl and 5 speed MT is the only "real" Toyota, correct?

Sure, as long as it is as small as a first gen.

Once you step into the 2005+, you're in T100 territory.

    Workin' on it....
I almost spit out my coffee.

I still can't stand the big chrome grill but with a pro grill or even the sr5 regular black grill, I have to say the front end styling of the 3rd gen has been growing on me. I'm pretty happy with my '13 but I do appreciate the updated look of the 3rd gens.
